A flight attendant has shared the secret code she gives to passengers that are her favourite to have on board.
Travel influencer and cabin crew member Jeenie, known as @Jeenie.Weenie on social media, explained that she will often look for people whom she labels as ‘ABPP’.
She explained that ‘ABP’ is a common in-flight abbreviation that used by flight attendants to identify able-bodied passengers who can help in an emergency, such as an evacuation.
Flight attendants usually identify ABPs early in the flight. They may look for passengers who are police officers, firefighters, doctors or nurses.
However, Jeenie takes this one step further. In the TikTok video, she explained she’s not just searching for an ABP but rather an “ABPP” – this stands for “Able Bodied People Pleaser.”
A people pleaser is described as “someone who consistently puts others’ needs before their own, often at the expense of their own”.
The ABPP, also portrayed by Jeenie, is depicted as exceedingly courteous, overly apologetic, and excessively accommodating, to the point where she takes on the flight attendants’ duties, the Daily Record reports.
Instead of being a help in a crisis, she finds herself distributing drinks and snacks so the crew doesn’t have to.
She refuses to let any of the cabin staff exert themselves, insisting on fetching her own refreshments from the back of the plane, offering to replenish the snack cart, and eagerly volunteering to deliver water to another passenger.
Essentially, she becomes like an additional member of the crew. Intrigued viewers swarmed the comments section of the video to express their thoughts on the novel term, apparently coined by Jeenie herself.
One flight attendant revealed: “I remembered we had this (passenger), she was bored on a 14hr flight and then she asked if she could help us in the galley.”
Another confessed that they often volunteer to assist the cabin crew as “its much more interesting than just sitting”.
Other eager passengers chimed in, saying they’d love to lend a hand to the staff on their next flight.
Many were reminded of their own mothers by the helpful passenger in the video, with one commenting: “OMG my mom is literally that type of person.”
A few years ago, former flight attendant Carrie told The Sun about the criteria for selecting an ABP, explaining: “At the door, whilst greeting passengers and checking their boarding card, I would make a very quick assessment to see if they were well, coherent, could understand me and looked fit and healthy.”
She explained: “It may come out they are fireman, in the army, an off duty pilot or cabin crew or a doctor, which is all useful information.”
