With a wide range of activities, advice and support available, including Sporting Memories and Day Clubs for a chat and a cuppa, advice on benefits and welfare checks, and even taking your dog for a walk if you are struggling to get out and about, YCFCF and AUKY want to raise awareness of the services available and how to find out more about them, for yourself or loved ones.
The higher cost of living and ongoing cold weather have added additional challenges, with Age UK York warning that darker nights and cold weather can make it harder for people to get out and about, leaving them feeling lonely or out of sorts.
Chris Farrell, head of community services, said: “I went to the York City match on New Year’s Day with my son, and, looking round a packed stadium, it struck me that families have been doing this for generations. It’s been a tough January for many of us, and I wondered how many of those families had returned to their homes across the country, still worrying about friends and family in York.”
Paula Stainton, Foundation Manager, said: “We are all about making a difference for all ages, from supporters to the wider community of York.
“We know how hard it can be at this time of year when the cold weather and shorter days can cause people to feel isolated even within our own homes.
“There is a great symmetry between what both organisations offer, so as soon as Chris got in touch, we immediately saw the value in partnering to jointly raise awareness of how we can help reduce those feelings.
“We simply want our fans and their families to know that we are here for those they care about, no matter what they are facing.”
Joan, a long time York City fan and member of York City Foundation’s Sporting Memories group, who didn’t want to give her surname, said: “It’s always special to be with friends and family at Christmas, nobody wants to be on their own.
“The football family at YCFCF helps to combat that loneliness when your family have returned to their own homes. As parents all we ask is stay in touch, a regular phone call, text or WhatsApp message means the world.”
