Nestled in the heart of Italy‘s Umbria is a village that is often referred to as being among “I Borghi più belli d’Italia”, translating to the most beautiful villages of Italy. This walled medieval village of Montone is almost in the centre of Italy and has a rich history behind it.
The village is the origin of the Fortebracci Condottieri family, whose most famous member was Braccio da Montone.
Situated at the top of a hill, the village sits 482 metres above sea level offering lovely views across the Tiber and Carpina rivers. Brick-paved streets wind through the village, while balconies draped in colourful flowers hang overhead.
Other streets are made up of narrow stairways and dark alleyways that open up into small squares and gardens.
Montone is surrounded by imposing walls, which hold the stately bell towers and the Rocca di Braccio which was restored after being destroyed in 1478.
Yet despite its charming aesthetic, the village remains rather anonymous compared to other destinations across Italy.
CEO and co-founder of villa rental provider Top Villas, James Mannings said: “It remains off of many travellers’ radars, but it can be easily reached in just under two hours by car from the capital of neighbouring Tuscany – Florence.
“Direct flights to Florence can also be found from London airports and take only two hours and 20 minutes, costing as little as £80 return at the start of summer.”
However, the quiet destination is one that has drawn in some famous faces over the years.
“Montone is also home to a world-renowned annual film festival, which has welcomed A-listers like Bill Nighy and – more recently – Stanley Tucci, with animator of ‘Wallace and Gromit’ Peter Lord CBE even stating that it is “the most beautiful place in the world” after he visited,” said James.
Montone’s Centro Storico was awarded a Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award in 2023, with one previous visitor describing it as the “hidden jewel of Umbria” in a review.
They added: “If you look for just a short walk, beautiful sites, great food and fine wine Montone should be your destination. For us, it was a jewel.”
Another previous traveller wrote: “The most beautiful village we discovered during our vacation. Very clean country and very kind people.” [SIC]
