Asda shoppers have been issued a £610 warning over the cost of their weekly shopping.

Customers of the big green supermarket giant are being told they are spending £610 a year more on their weekly shops than customers of Aldi.

Aldi, the discount German retailer, was crowned cheapest in the UK for the second month running in an analysis by Which? magazine.

The consumer affairs publication ran a test comparing the price of 63 typical staple items from every major UK supermarket including Asda, Aldi, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Lidl and Morrisons as well as Tesco and Ocado.

Aldi came out cheapest, with a total cost of £113.87 in July, closely followed by Lidl, at £116.24.

Asda was in third place, charging shoppers £125.61 on average for its goods, while Tesco – even factoring in Clubcard prices – was still more expensive than Asda, as was Sainsbury’s, even with a Nectar card

Morrisons was behind the lot, trailing a distant 7th place, including non-Clubcard Tesco customers.

The figures mean that Asda shoppers are spending £11 more per weekly shop on average than customers at Aldi. Taken across an entire year, that’s a £610 difference.

The good news for Asda customers is that, in a separate test looking at a wider range of products, Asda was the cheapest supermarket, beating Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.

Which? ran another test which included 169 items. Aldi and Lidl were excluded from this test due to not stocking some of the products in the larger test.

Asda came in as the cheapest, at £427.35, while Tesco including Clubcard prices was second with £430.21 and Sainsbury’s Nectar card shops were third at £435.05.

So although it’s dearer than Aldi for weekly staples, if you’re doing a big shop on a wider range of products, Asda is the best bet according to the figures.
