Water babies are in for a delight with this alluring fishing village that earned its nickname as being the “Cold Hawaii”.
Many may not associate a seaside resort in Denmark for its comparison to such a tropical place, but Klitmøller is just that.
The region has been dubbed a prime location for surfers since the 1980s where a traditional fishing town meets an international surf scene.
But Klitmøller offers far more than just a surfer’s paradise, with a coffee-coloured beach, an array of wooden fishing boats, and plenty of things to do and see.
This Denmark village has only 820 inhabitants allowing for a peaceful getaway perfect for the avid surfers and kiteboarders.
Klitmøller is located in the region of North Jutland on the North Sea coast near the town of Thisted.
The Cold Hawwai nickname is thanks in part to its location as the long stretch of coast allows for ideal wind conditions making it the prime surfing location.
Surfing is therefore synonymous in this region and has been hailed as one of the best places in Europe for the sport.
A number of surf competitions take place here including the Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup.
Klitmøller also has its windsurfing championship held every year with kitesurfing another popular activity.
Local Casper Steinfath spoke of the region’s prime surfing it offers in an interview with GQ, and said: “My dad says it reminds him of what California was like back in the 1960s and 1970s. It still feels untamed.”
Surfers looking for the best time for optimal waves are recommended to visit Klitmøller between September and November.
But it’s not all about the water sports in Klitmøller, as the region is also surrounded by Thy National Park.
This 94 square mile park stretches from the northern Hanstholm lighthouse to the southern Agger Tange and is home to an abundance of wildlife.
It’s a true feast for the eyes with dunes, forests, and numerous lakes providing a picture perfect setting.
When it comes to popular food items in this Danish village a must is the national dish of Denmark known as stegt flæsk which are pieces of pork that are fried until crisp which is then served with boiled potatoes and parsley sauce.
