NEW DELHI: England on Sunday created a dubious record after losing the second ODI of the three-match series against India at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. The Jos Buttler-led side suffered a four-wicket defeat to the hosts after setting a target of 305, making it their 28th such loss after posting a 300-plus total in ODIs.
This unwanted milestone makes England the team with the most defeats in ODIs after scoring 300-plus totals. They have so far surpassed the 300-run mark in 99 matches. Previously, England and India shared the record, with the latter having suffered 27 defeats in 136 matches after scoring 300 or more.

Most defeats in ODIs after scoring 300+

In Cuttack, India captain Rohit Sharma defied a floodlight failure to return to form with a stunning 119 as India secured a series-clinching win over England.
Chasing 305 for victory, Rohit’s 90-ball knock, featuring 12 fours and seven sixes, set the stage for India’s chase as they reached the target with 33 balls to spare. The hosts took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, which serves as preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy starting February 19 in Pakistan and Dubai.

Rohit, 37, reached his 32nd ODI century in just 76 balls, bringing up the landmark with a six off leg-spinner Adil Rashid after sharing a 136-run opening stand with Shubman Gill.

England captain Jos Buttler acknowledged the team’s shortcomings post-match, stating, “I thought we did a lot of things well, we got into a nice position with the bat. We needed someone to push on and get us to 350. Credit to Rohit, he batted superbly, he has been batting like this for a few years in ODI cricket. Wanted to get runs on the board, it skidded on a bit, and the opposition also played well. We played the powerplay brilliantly, but we needed someone to kick on, and a score around 330-350 would have been defendable. Just keep taking steps in the right direction, the results are not there, but we need to keep going and be positive.”
This defeat also marked England’s fourth consecutive ODI series loss since the 2023 World Cup and their seventh straight ODI series loss in India over the past 20 years.
