The Conservative party has been engulfed in a election betting scandal after one of its candidates and her husband are being investigated over a bet relating to the timing of the general election.
Tory candidate for Bristol North West Laura Saunders and the party’s director of campaigning Tony Lee are currently being looked into by the Gambling Commission.
The couple are the latest party members to face gambling allegations after Craig Williams apologised over betting on the date of the general election.
It comes as a police officer in Rishi Sunak’s close protection team was arrested and suspended over alleged bets about the timing of the general election.
The prime minister is now facing calls to suspend the probed members with the Lib Dem deputy leader Daisy Cooper labelled the situation an “utter disgrace” and Labour’s campaign co-ordinator Pat McFadden urged Mr Sunak to withdraw support from candidates.
Nigel Farage, who is campaigning in Cheshire, has said the Tories are “bitterly divided” while speaking to rural voters.

Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey gave his thoughts on England’s imminent clash with Denmark in the Euros as he campaigned in Sheffield.
He said: “It’s a very, very, important match. I thought we did well in the first match. I’m sure we’ll do even better tonight.
“The Danes have always been quite tough competitors but we remember the last time, when we beat them, came from behind. So, let’s hope we do that tonight, let’s hope we get a really good result for England.”

Tory betting scandal: Starmer calls candidates to be suspended
If a Labour candidate had used inside information to place a bet on the election, “their feet would not have touched the floor” on the way out, Sir Keir Starmer has said.
Asked about allegations Conservative candidate Laura Saunders had placed a bet on the date of the General Election, Sir Keir said: “This candidate should be suspended and it’s very telling that Rishi Sunak has not already done that.
“If it was one of my candidates, they’d be gone and their feet would not have touched the floor.
“There’s a wider point here that you touched on, which is we’ve now had 14 years of chaos, of division, of politics being about self-entitlement, and politics needs to be about service, about public service.
“That is one of the choices now going into this election – more of this, or turn the page, rebuild the country and return politics to service, and that’s what I will do as Labour leader.”

Labour pledges to tackle escalating rents
Labour would pass a law to prevent landlords conducting “bidding wars” between potential renters, Sir Keir Starmer has said.
Asked how Labour would tackle escalating rents without implementing a rent cap, he told Sky News: “You can stop the bidding wars because what happens there is the landlord effectively goes between two or three different renters driving the rent up and up and up.
“We won’t allow them to do that. We will introduce a law that says you can’t do it because at the moment what happens is they sort of go back between the renters.
“The other thing we need to do is stop the extortionate deposits that are being asked of people, and make sure the conditions are good because we’ve heard of these terrible cases with mould and damp and the effect it has on people, in some tragic cases even death.”
