eBay has launched its new consignment service for luxury items in Britain, “giving users direct access to expert sellers who will list and sell their items on their behalf”.
It’s working with luxury seller Luxe Collective on the project with the e-tailer saying Luxe Collective’s specialism in selling coveted pre-owned luxury goods means it brings “unrivalled expertise to the consignment service”.
Unsurprisingly, the service is launching initially for that most popular consignment category, designer handbags. eBay said it can now “help consumers to list and sell their new and pre-owned handbags from top brands across all price points including Chanel, Hermès, and Louis Vuitton”.
In fact, the eligible brands for the service include Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, Balenciaga, Balmain, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Bulgari, Celine, Chanel, Chloé, Christian Louboutin, Delvaux, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Givenchy, Goyard, Gucci, Hermès, Jil Sander, Jimmy Choo, Judith Leiber, Lanvin, Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Mark Cross, Marni, MCM, Miu Miu, Mulberry, Off-White, Prada, Proenza Schouler, Saint Laurent, Salvatore Ferragamo, Stella McCartney, The Row, Tom Ford, Valentino, and Versace.
eBay isn’t currently accepting brands that aren’t part of this list.
The service previously launched in the US and the company said that items sold through it “are seeing significantly higher final sale prices, than those listed traditionally on eBay”. It gave the example of a small quilted Chanel 19 flap bag that sold for over 45% more than the average sales price for similar bags on the marketplace.
The two partners in the service said they’ve put it together to make everything as simple as possible.
The user fills out the consignment intake form by answering a few simple questions, then on submission of the form, a prepaid, insured shipping label is provided. eBay and Luxe Collective handle the item’s photography, pricing, and listing. And once the item sells, the user and Luxe Collective receive the proceeds from the sale, with the user receiving a majority percentage based on the item’s selling price.
Mari Corella, GM of Luxury and Sneakers at eBay said: “As consumer interest in shopping for pre-loved luxury continues to grow in popularity, eBay is evolving to ensure it is at the forefront to provide shoppers with the best service. Consignment follows our already popular Authenticity Guarantee service that vets and verifies luxury goods, as we continue to enable customers to buy and sell on the platform with ease and peace of mind.”
