Drivers will experience “major disruption” on part of the M25 this weekend, as a section of the motorway is being shut in both directions for roadworks from today, an expert has warned. Part of London’s orbital highway is shut from this morning, with disruption lasting for the rest of the weekend. This is set to affect journeys in and out of the capital and to Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
Motorists have been advised not to travel on the stretch of road impacted unless they have to. Those who are still planning to drive have been urged to plan ahead. This may include using different roads. Experts have also suggested setting off earlier than planned, or using public transport.
Confused.com car insurance expert, Rhydian Jones, said: “Part of the UK’s busiest motorway will be shut in both directions from Friday morning for this weekend, and again later this month.
“Not only will this impact those driving in and out of London, but also those heading to Gatwick and Heathrow airports.
“That’s why all drivers in the area are being encouraged to not travel unless completely necessary during this time.
He added: “But for those who do need to travel, prepping ahead of your journey could be hugely beneficial.
“Taking an alternative driving route could be the best option. But if you are driving, be wary that the diversion route planned could be very congested.
“That’s why drivers should allow more time than usual. You should also consider preparing alternative travel options if possible, like considering other transport links, such as train services.”
National Highways has warned on its website that the M25 between Junction 10 and 11 will be closed in both directions from Friday at 9pm until Monday at 6am.
“The full closure is needed for bridge demolition,” officials say.
“If you have to travel, make sure that you allow plenty of extra time for your journey.”
