City where tourists can hike up volcanoes named best destination for 2025

Brits all have their favourite holiday destinations they may return to again and again. Whether it is their honeymoon destination, first solo trip or a family holiday they go back to time and time again.

However, new research from travel publication National Geographic has found the best places to travel in the world next year.

The team have created a bucket list with the top 25 destinations to visit in 2025 and while you may think the new year is a while away it gives travellers enough time to get saving and sort out their itinerary.

These destinations include a hike across Romania and a national forest in Florida – there’s quite literally something for everyone.

Even better, a destination in the UK has made the list.

Antigua in Guatemala topped the list. The city is known as a preserved Spanish colonial spot where tourists can get around easily on foot.

Travellers can also stroll through the cobbled street, explore the parks or hike up one of the volcanoes which overlook the stunning city.

Acatenango Volcano is one of the best activities to do, according to visitors on TripAdvisor with one traveller writing: “Our one-day excursion to Acatenango Volcano was an unforgettable experience!

“The hike itself was manageable, with just the right level of challenge for a day trip. Our guide paced the hike perfectly, ensuring we had plenty of breaks to catch our breath and take in the breathtaking scenery.”

A second said: “Hiking Acatenango was an absolutely incredible experience. Cannot recommend this enough! Obviously not for the faint of heart. It’s a tough hike anyway and the elevation makes it even harder.”

Another commented: “One of the best hikes of my life I recommend 100 percent it’s truly a hidden gem. The hike is a little difficult, but so worth it once you get to see the view.”

Travellers also rated Pacaya Volcano as the second most popular attraction in Antigua on TripAdvisor.

One person wrote: “Wow what an experience and adventure. I recommend the trek up the volcano but just wear shoes you don’t mind getting dirty and dress comfortably.”

Another commented: “This is a medium-level hike due to inclination, loose soil and rocks. Horses are available to better enjoy the experience. Best to go early as fog and rain may block the view to the volcanos from the top.”

A third said: “It was a lovely day trip and easy hike, able to visit between 6am and 1pm. We went to a tour group of 15-20 people, able to see the old Lava from Volconas.”

Flights to Antigua, Guatemala

There are no direct flights from the UK to Antigua, Guatemala. However, those travelling from London or Manchester to Antigua can get a stopover flight.

Travellers will be stopping in destinations such as New York, Dallas and Miami for their flyover visit with flights taking 16 hours depending on your stopover time.
