A West Sussex couple who have been travelling round the world on a tandem bicycle have said they have “no plans to stop yet”.

David Barr and his wife Helen, from Chichester, say they like to “escape from real life” for months at a time.

The pair also like travelling to places people don’t often go and are planning their next trip to Kazakhstan.

However, on one trip they ended up in the middle of a conflict when in Georgia, which led to them having to “escape through villages being bombed” along with their two daughters.

They managed to find a driver who took them over the border to Turkey.

In Turkey, a Polish Ambassador offered them a ride to Warsaw on the Polish equivalent of Air Force One.

Their daughters spent the entire duration of the flight in the cockpit with the pilots.

The couple have said they have no plans to stop going on their expeditions.

Some of their more recent trips have included going up the Himalayas and the length of the China/India border and peddling the entire length of Africa.

Mr Barr said: “A comfortable distance in a day is 60 miles.

“The routes are not pre-determined, neither is our destination as when we go on these trips, we never have a fight booked home.”

The couple added that they have so many trips planned, they think they will be going until they are “about 100 years old”.
