The Grocer compared the price of a basket of 33 items
Aldi has been identified as the UK’s cheapest supermarket by the industry magazine The Grocer, following an analysis of prices on a basket of 33 common grocery items.
The study found that the four largest full-price supermarkets—Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Morrisons—were, on average, 17% more expensive than Aldi. The total cost of the item basket at Aldi was £45.13, compared to £54.78 at Morrisons, £53.65 at Sainsbury’s, £51.63 at Asda, and £51.61 at Tesco.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, commented on the findings, asserting that the data confirms Aldi’s pricing strategy. She emphasised that while other supermarkets may employ price matching and loyalty programs, these often do not result in substantial savings for shoppers.
Aldi ranks as the fourth-largest supermarket in the UK, accounting for roughly 10% of total grocery spending. Consumer advocacy group Which? has also recognised Aldi as the cheapest supermarket for the past three years and every month of 2024 so far.
