Prior to Saturday’s Kentucky-Louisville game, there were questions as to whether UK starting point guard Lamont Butler would play in the game, after missing Kentucky’s last two games due to injury.
Not only did Butler play on Saturday, he played the game of his life. The graduate student made all 10 of his shots from the floor, including six from behind the arc, on his way to a career-high 33 points as No. 5 Kentucky held off Louisville 93-85 on Saturday at Rupp Arena.
Butler’s feat was among the most efficient performances in Kentucky history. Only Rodney Dent (12 of 12 vs. Morehead State in 1993) and Kenny Walker (11 of 11 vs. Western Kentucky in 1986) have ever done better than Butler did on Saturday.
Butler was certainly not alone on Saturday. Otega Oweh added 17 points for UK, while Jaxson Robinson had 12 points and eight rebounds. Andrew Carr had 10 points and nine rebounds, while Koby Brea also had 10 points for the Cats.
Kentucky came out of the gate on fire, making its first five shots from the field. It started with an Amari Williams bucket in the lane. After Louisville took a brief 3-2 lead, UK got a Robinson basket and an Oweh dunk to build a 6-3 lead. U of L cut it to 6-5 before the Cats exploded. A pair of Carr free throws, followed by a three from Robinson and a three from Butler comprised an 8-0 run that gave the Cats a 14-5 lead and forced a Louisville timeout.
Louisville scored the next two baskets to cut the UK lead to 14-9. However, UK answered with a Butler three and a Carr dunk to lead 19-9. The Cards scored the next five before a Brea three and an Oweh layup made it 24-14 Cats.
After U of L scored, Brea drove to the basket for a bucket and Oweh followed with a dunk that gave the Cats a 28-16 advantage. The Cards would hit a pair of threes around a Brea dunk, getting within eight, 30-22.
The Cards would continue to climb back into the game, hitting two more threes around a Carr dunk to make it 32-28. After a pair of Butler free throws, U of L got a basket to cut the UK lead to 34-30 with 5:09 left in the half.
Kentucky scored five of the next six points to lead 39-31. However, the Cats could not pull away, as the Cards got within four just before halftime. A Butler layup with two seconds left in the half made the score 46-40 at the half. Butler led UK with 12 points in the first 20 minutes.
As the second half began, Butler did not slow down. Louisville scored the first basket of the half before Butler drilled three triples in just over two minutes. A Brandon Garrison dunk made it 57-47 and forced a U of L timeout.
The teams would trade baskets before the Cards scored seven in a row, cutting the UK lead to 59-56. However, Kentucky answered with a 12-5 run, making it 71-61 with 10:54 to play.
After the Cards hit a three to make it 71-64, Butler made one of two at the line and Carr scored to make it 74-64. The teams exchanged threes before U of L made it 77-69. A pair of Garrison free throws extended the lead to 10 before Louisville hit another three and two free throws to cut the UK lead to 79-74 with 3:17 to play. Louisville would get no closer.
