Brits warned as nine Greek islands undergo airport upgrades

British travellers looking to escape to Greece for some winter sunshine have been warned to expect potential disruption to flights.

As part of a €440million (£371m) investment, Fraport Greece is carrying out a number of redevelopment projects at airports across the country.

The company is the operator of 14 Greek regional airports, including those on several islands popular with British tourists.

Fraport Greece has just announced the latest phase of redevelopment work and warned passengers of imminent airport closures.

Express.co.uk has listed below the airports set to be affected, including when the closures will take place.

Samos (SMI): 05 November 2024 – 25 November 2024
Mytilini (MJT): 24 hours every Tuesday 00:01* – 23:59* (Period November 15, 2024 – March 25, 2025)
Corfu (CFU): 18 November 2024 – 08 December 2024 & 13 January 2025 – 31 January 2025
Kefalonia (EFL): 25 November 2024 – 15 December 2024
Rhodes (RHO): 48 hours every Tuesday 18:00* – Thursday 17:59* (Period 10 December 2024 – 31 January 2025)
Santorini (JTR): 08 January 2025 – 23 January 2025
Kavala (KVA): January 10, 2025 – January 30, 2025
Mykonos (JMK): 25 January 2025 – 15 February 2025
Zakynthos (ZTH): 15 February 2025 – 05 March 2025

Santorini and Mykonos airports are some of the busiest in Greece, according to latest data.

Mykonos Airport ranks among the top 10 busiest airports in the country and serves the popular island of the Cyclades.

It sees more than one million passengers per year, the majority of whom arrive in the summer.

The airport has only one terminal for Schengen and non-Schengen flights and during the winter traffic is very low with Aegean Airlines and Sky Express operating flights to Athens.

However, it gets busy during the summer as seasonal flights from over 30 airlines like Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, and Ryanair are added to the regular flight schedule.

Santorini airport is the eighth busiest airport in Greece with nearly 2.5 million passengers.

It was opened in 1972 and is located just a 10-minute car ride from the centre of Fira.
