Two British girls on holiday in Greece have been left baffled after discovering they were the only ones staying in their hotel. Tors Eardley, 20, and her friend arrived at the Irene Apartments in Agios Gordios in Corfu to find the pool closed and the town almost empty.

As the friends travelled outside of peak tourist season, only a handful of bars and restaurants were open. 

When arriving at their hotel, they claimed a receptionist told them they were the only guests in the buildings. Though it did have some perks, with the pair being given one of the larger rooms.

Although the pool was on the listing when they booked, the unlucky holidaymakers claimed that it was actually shared with two other locations and was allegedly shut for the weekend due to maintenance. 

When they decided to get some food and drink, they headed into the local town around 4pm but found that all the shops were closed.

“We booked a really cheap holiday to Corfu, and we’re in a town where there’s nothing open, no shops, no restaurants, no locals, there was no one even in the hotel,” Tors told What’sTheJam.

“We laughed for about an hour, then we realised we had no water and hardly any food [available in the area]. We soon stopped laughing.

“The balcony had a metal fence at the back of it. There was no pool area as it was closed out of season. The room was big and had a nice big kitchen, but it was so dull. The receptionist didn’t stay on site, she went home so it was literally just us.”

They had paid £200 for the four-day stay, but decided to swap hotels in the end.

Tors added: “For £200 for four days on a bank holiday weekend, we can’t do too much complaining. The local area was lovely and would be nice in season when everything is open. It turns out that people have siestas so at about 6pm, two shops opened so we were able to get some food. [But] we ended up booking a different hotel so we could have a pool and we got a private pool so it went from a budget holiday to a boujee holiday.”

Despite the experience, the pair decided against complaining to their travel operator and Irene apartments. Tors said: “There was no point in complaining, the holiday cost so little that it wasn’t worth it. We paid £200 for two nights at a new hotel, the Agios Gordios beach resort.”
