A British tennis star involved in this year’s US Open has blasted the Barranquilla Open organisers after her prize money was delayed.
Tara Moore competed in the competition earlier this month, featuring in the doubles event alongside fellow Brit Emily Appleton.
The duo were knocked out in the opening round of action, losing in straight sets to Australian Destanee Aiava and her Greek playing partner Despina Papamichail.
However, despite their early exit, Moore has claimed via Instagram she’s yet to be paid by the event organisers.
Posting on social media, the 32-year-old said: “Imagine working at a job, travelling there, paying expenses etc for them to say ‘Sorry we can’t pay you right now as we don’t have the funds’. That’s what it’s like to play tennis.”
The post was accompanied by a screenshot from what looked like an email which read: “Dear Barranquilla player, there has been a delay in Barranquilla Prize Money, as we have not yet received the funds from the tournament.
“We expect to receive them within the next couple of weeks and will wire out prize money as soon as received.”
It’s safe to say tennis fans were just as outraged as Moore, with many taking to social media to voice their anger.
@1gamesetmatch commented: “The WTA should have an emergency fund for times like this. And then the tournaments can wire the WTA when they get the money.”
@rdmtennisfan replied: “It’s prize money, shouldn’t the money be, like, set aside ahead of time…like prizes usually are?”
Before the same user noted: “Also, it’s a mass email (‘dear Barranquilla player’???)”
@dandresaldi replied: “I think WTA will have to check in advance if tournaments actually have the money.”
Whereas @tennisywilliams chimed in with: “That’s wild the WTA should definitely pay players while they wait for the money from the tournament, the players shouldn’t have to incur the expense.”
Express Sport has contacted the WTA for comment.
Moore and her fellow tennis counterparts will be hoping for swifter remuneration following this summer’s US Open.
The good news for the British star, her US Open campaign has at least been extended into the second round, after winning her round-one doubles tie with Swiss partner Viktorija Golubic.
The duo got the better of American duo Sabrina Santamaria and McCartney Kessler in round one, with Nicole Melichar-Martinez (USA) and Ellen Perez (Australia) up next.
