One of the British hikers who went missing on Tuesday in Majorca has been reportedly found dead, while the second UK national who vanished after a violent storm hit the mountainous area of the Balearic island is still missing.
Local reports claimed a British man aged 32 was found near the spot where Spanish police had begun their search.
The desperate mission in a mountainous region in northwestern Majorca continues to find the other missing Brit.
Police officers are trying to establish the hiker’s whereabouts by triangulating their mobile phones.
The hikers were believed to have been near the Torrent de Pareis, a river in the Tramuntana mountain range on Majorca’s northwest coast, when they vanished.
Parts of the island, including the mountain range, have been affected by severe flooding after the Balearic island was battered by heavy rain on September 3. The storms are expected to worsen today.
A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency services coordination centre said this morning, prior to the tragic finding of one of the hikers: “A search is ongoing for two hikers missing since last night in the vicinity of Torrent de Pareis in Escorca.”
Civil Guard officers and firefighters are understood to be involved in the ongoing operation.
