Snowdonia National Park in Wales is known for its incredible natural beauty, attracting thousands of visitors each year to hike the rugged landscape. Tucked away on the eastern flanks of Snowdon is a stunning lake which experts have described as a “hidden gem” that you may not know about.
Meaning “blue lake”, Llyn Glaslyn is a rough ellipse-shaped lake which resembles a heart.
BestCasinoSites.net, who analysed a list of the most beautiful places in the UK, said: “It is known for its heart-shaped appearance, but also in folklore for being the lake where Arthur had his sword thrown into.
As part of a stunning location, visitors can expect to see breathtaking views.”
In Welsh folklore, Arthur had Bedivere throw his sword Excalibur into Llyn Glaslyn, where Arthur’s body was later placed in a boat to be carried away to Afallon.
Arthur’s men then retreated to a cave on the slopes of Y Lliwedd, where they were said to have slept until they were needed.
Merlin is supposed to have hidden the golden throne of Britain among the cliffs north of Crib y Ddysgl when the Saxons invaded.
There are also tales that the lake is the final resting place of a water monster known as afanc, which is said to have plagued the people of the Conwy Valley.
Of course, people don’t just come here to soak up the folklore, but also for the incredible vistas which surround the area.
The lake can be reached on a hike in Snowdonia. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of three hours and 10 minutes to complete the Llyn Llydaw and Glaslyn hike according to AllTrails.
The Snowdonia National Park covers a total of 823 square miles and contains all 15 mountains in Wales over 3,000 feet high. The highest mountain in the park, and the entire country, is Snowdon, where you will find the beautiful lake.
Most hikers concentrate on Snowdon but this can mean that it gets crowded at peak times of year, especially when the weather is nice.
However, there are also some spectacular walks in Snowdonia on the lower mountains.
