The first of the big four grand slam tennis tournaments is about to get under way with some of the biggest names in the sport heading to Australia.

Melbourne plays host to the Australian Open as ever with Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka looking to defend their titles in the men’s and women’s singles respectively.

Novak Djokovic meanwhile will be hoping to get back the men’s title he has previously won 10 times.

We take a look at what’s in store for the first few days of the tournament.

When is the 2025 Australian Open?

The Australian Open is a two-week tennis tournament which runs from Sunday 12 January to Sunday 26 January.

The top-ranked 104 players are entered automatically, other players must go through the qualifying rounds which began on Monday 6 January.

Melbourne is 11 hours ahead of GMT, so day sessions on the outer courts will start at midnight GMT and 12.30am GMT on the show courts.

The night sessions, held on Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and John Cain Arena, will start at 8am GMT.

And the singles finals for men and women will be held at 8.30am GMT.

The wheelchair tournament will run from 21-25 January and the junior tournament will be from 18-27 January.

What is the draw for the first round?

Young Brit Jacob Fearnley will make his Australian Open debut against home favourite Nick Kyrgios.

He is one of seven British players included in this year’s men’s and women’s singles draws.

British number one Jack Draper will face world No 46 Mariano Navone, while 29-year-old Cameron Norrie plays 2021 Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini.

In the women’s singles draw,  Katie Boulter will play Canadian Rebecca Marino and Emma Raducanu is up against the No 26 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Andy Murray will also be at the tournament just five months after retiring, but in a coaching capacity, working with Djokovic.
