Australia is just 114 runs behind England already, after a dominant display on day one of this Test.
England’s bowlers were very positive in their innings in the final session there, but they are still such a long way behind in the game.
The Aussies will look to bat all day tomorrow if they can, and really grind this demoralised England team into the dust.
The crowd was 11,643 today, but if the match keeps going into the weekend, you’d hope those numbers will increase.
Annabelle Sutherland is speaking to Fox Sports.
“Hopefully we’ll have a good day tomorrow,” Sutherland says.
“A couple were nipping around a bit … it sets us up for tomorrow pretty well.”
It does set Australia up really well, and that’s where Dean and I will be joining you from tomorrow.
Thanks for being with us today, catch you next time.
Sutherland clips off her pads and they will run three. That’s really good running and brings up the 50 for Australia.
1-51 off 21.1 overs.
Litchfield clips off her pads for a single.
Sutherland drives to point, straight to the fielder though so there is no run.
Solid defence from Sutherland to a ball that didn’t quite get up as much as it might have given where it pitched.
FOUR! Magic from Sutherland, driving through the covers for another boundary. Perfect shot, wonderful timing.
Solid defence to end the over, and the day’s play.
Litchfield cuts from deep in her crease and takes a single.
Short leg, silly point and slip.
FOUR! Brilliant from Sutherland, just skipping down the pitch and clipping the ball through extra cover for a boundary. Nice shot.
Solid defence “Very nice Soph,” cry the England fielders.
Sutherland gets off strike with a little push into the off side for a single.
Solid defence from Litchfield.
FOUR! Litchfield skips down the pitch, slaps the ball down the ground for a boundary.
Sutherland clips away to an orthodox mid on for no run.
Alyssa Healy is padded up, so no night watchwoman or night hawk or joker card to be played by Australia it seems, should a wicket fall.
Good take down the leg side by Jones, as MacDonald-Gay strays.
BIG APPEAL! Missing leg for me, but the ball nipped back and rapped Sutherland on the pad.
Oh, last second decision, but England will review!
The more we see this, the more it looks like it’s going down leg for me…
And that’s what ball tracker shows as well, missing a hypothetical fourth stump by a fair distance too, in truth.
No runs from the over, but England does lose a review.
Slip and bat pad in place for Litchfield, who punches the ball to a straight mid on for no run.
That popped up a bit towards that mid on, but fell very short.
Litchfield clips off her pads and there is no run taken there to square leg.
Solid defence, a solid stride from Litchfield there.
And another good over from the spinner, but no real penetration from Ecclestone.
Good stop at cover there as Litchfield drives into the covers.
Now Litchfield pulls and gets a single to backward square leg.
Solid defence from Sutherland.
England have put a catching mid on in place for Sutherland to counter that dual-pace.
Solid defence this time from Sutherland.
FOUR! Sutherland pulls away through midwicket, a bit too short from MacDonald-Gay and she was punished for it.
Bell’s long stint ends, and we’re going to see some spin.
Good move from England, but Ecclestone needs to be accurate and back up her skipper here.
Slip, bat pad and silly point, all right under the nose of the batter Sutherland, who defends.
CHANCE! Sutherland clips the ball through the legs of Bouchier under the helmet at bat pad.
More solid defence from Sutherland – Bouchier is in the game here.
BIG APPEAL! A big shout but I think that was too high. Good ball though. Hit Sutherland in the belly – but England no interest at all in having a conversation.
Solid defence from Sutherland to end the over.
A maiden first up.
Lovely shot from Litchfield but no run.
Sciver-Brunt continues, Litchfield watchful and defending solidly.
Nothing of note from the over, it’s a maiden.
Eighth over in a row for Bell, continuing to probe and test these Aussie batters.
I do wonder when England will try spin. It was so successful for Australia earlier today.
Solid defence from Sutherland, Bell continues to ask questions of the batters out there.
Sutherland pulls from outside off through to midwicket for a couple.
Solid defence to end the over – just the two runs from it.
She’s been good so far, Sciver-Brunt, going for just two runs in her two overs so far.
FOUR! That’s a great shot from Litchfield, driving through the covers, scattering the sea gulls out there.
BEATEN! What a ball, missing the outside edge of the bat by barely an inch. That ball did an awful lot off the deck. Not much Litchfield could have done about it.
Solid defence by Litchfield to end another good over from Sciver-Brunt.
Seventh over in a row from Bell.
She steams in and Litchfield gets off strike very quickly.
Down the leg side, was there a clip there? Just off the pad I think. Nobody on the field is interested.
BEATEN! Good ball, Sutherland beaten all ends up outside off.
Solid defence to point.
Bell sticks a boot out in her follow through that sends the ball out to mid off for no run.
Solid defence from Litchfield, as Sciver-Brunt’s accuracy gets lots of support from the English close fielders behind the stumps.
Despite being a bit below par with the bat, and at the end of a woeful tour, England’s spirits are up.
Driven by Litchfield, just a single.
BIG APPEAL! Was there a sound there as Sutherland pulled an attempted bouncer?
There was a sound, and it’s the helmet that the ball hit. So we’re going to have a bit of a delay now as Sutherland goes through a concussion check and gets a new helmet. It’s just a slight brushing of the top of the helmet by the ball, but those are the rules.
Oh my, a very late pull out by Sutherland, who was distracted by a sea gull that flew past between Sciver-Brunt and Sutherland.
Anyone who has ever been to see a sporting event in Melbourne will know the plague of sea gulls that descend on sports events at this time of night. There are hundreds of them.
EDGED! A leading edge from Sutherland as she looks to work a swinging delivery into the leg side. No run, and just a momentary whiff of concern perhaps.
Sutherland is having to be watchful here, as the ball swings back in and draws a wry smile across the face of Bell.
Sutherland cramped up a little bit there as Sutherland has to dig an inswinger out from her feet.
A good over, a maiden from Bell.
The players are going to have a drink, but after it you’re still going to have me with you till the close.
Sutherland looks to work the ball into the off side but there’s no run there, Sciver-Brunt looking to keep the momentum up after her half century with the bat.
Now she gets a single, clipping to midwicket off her pads.
Good bit of inswing there by Nat Sciver-Brunt at the end of the over in which she conceded just one run.
Anabelle Sutherland has never batted higher than number six in a Test match.
She’s got a Test double ton to her name, but this is important for her, because her bowling has not been at its usual high standards to far this series.
FOUR! Magic shot – she’s not lost any of her sharpness with the bat in hand, a magical cover drive that is just stroked through the off side to get her off the mark.
Sutherland defends.
Now she clips off her pads and gets a single to backward square leg.
Litchfield defends.
Oh good ball, swinging in and rapping Litchfield on the gloves.
Solid defence there from Litchfield to end the over, as the sea guls flock around the MCG.
Litchfield defends solidly.
Filer is steaming in with her tail up, buoyed by the success at the other end, but she can’t get Litchfield playing.
Good ball, Litchfield defends solidly as it swings from the off side towards leg stump as Filer continues to come flying in.
Georgia Voll has a huge swing at a ball that simply wasn’t there for driving and she gets a thick edge behind to Jones and she’s out.
Ellyse Perry was due to be in at three, but Sutherland is coming in instead.
Solid defence from Litchfield, who has been patient for her 2 off 22 balls.
She leaves the next one as well, outside off, no need to play at that.
She defends the next. Good ball, well played. Bell is keeping things tight and Litchfield is unwilling to gamble yet.
FOUR! That’s sublime from Litchfield! Too straight, too full and just leant on by Litchfield for a boundary down the ground. Great patience from Litchfield.
Now a single, a quick one to cover, a very good piece of running there from the Aussies. This is not the best fielding team in the world and the Aussies can steadily erode the confidence that England has come out with by taking those sorts of runs.
And Voll defends the first.
FOUR! Driven by Voll down the ground, a beautiful shot to an abject full toss. Nicely put away.
Misfield off her own bowling from Filer and Voll takes a single.
Filer pushes one across the face of Litchfield, who leaves it well alone.
And now she clips away for a single.
A low full toss and it’s fielded nicely at mid off.
