Home to more than 8.5 million people, Hanoi is said to have a rich history, having been founded more than 1,000 years ago. Hanoi also boasts ancient temples, “buzzing” markets, a wealth of drinking holes and “sophisticated” rooftop bars, according to vietnam.travel. Top recommendations include sampling street food in the city’s Old Quarter, exploring Hanoi’s cafe culture and mixing with the locals at Hoan Kiem Lake, which is recognised as the heart of the city.
Must see attractions recommended by Lonely Planet include the Temple of Literature, Dong Xuan Market, Tran Quoc Pagoda, Hoa Lo Prison Museum and the Mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, a “monumental marble edifice” where Vietnam’s former leader is entombed.
