Scotland midfielder Stuart Armstrong has a “big chance” to be fit for Euro 2024, says Southampton manager Russell Martin.
He was taken off on a stretcher while playing against Cardiff City and Martin said on Saturday it was “a bad one”.
However, Martin gave an update on the 32-year-old on Monday and said while he is unlikely to return for Saints this season he was positive about Euro 2024.
“It’s his quad, it’s a muscle injury,” Martin told the club’s website.
“We’ll do everything we can to get him fit for the Euros for Scotland. I think he has a big chance for that, I don’t think he has any chance of playing for us really.
“He has a big hope of getting in the Scotland squad because he’s been fantastic for them and has been in every squad. I think there’s a realistic chance with the injury he has to be fit for that.
“So we will do everything we can to help him get there. It wasn’t as serious as we all feared but it is serious enough to keep him out for a period of time where he can’t help us.”
Bologna’s Lewis Ferguson, another central midfielder, is set to miss Euro 2024 with a knee injury while there are doubts over right-backs Nathan Patterson and Aaron Hickey.
Armstrong won his 50th cap in last month’s 1-0 defeat by Northern Ireland at Hampden Park.
Scotland’s first match of the tournament is against hosts Germany on 14 June.
