British Airways has announced it will be upgrading with a new route from the UK to the region of Dordogne in south-west France.
The airline currently already flies to 11 other destinations in France, including Bastia, Boredeux, Chambery, Figari, Grenoble, Marseille, Montpellier, Nice, Paris Charles-de-Gaulla, Quimper and Toulouse.
However, the expansion will now provide travellers with an additional access to the world’s most visited country.
From summer 2025, travellers will be offered a route from London Stanstead to Bergerac Airport. Starting from the end of June, there will be one flight per week in each direction.
It comes at great timing as over three million tourists visit the region each year, with a majority of them visiting between July and August.
Dordogne which has been referred to as “the most magical place on the earth”, is a beautiful region between the Loire Valley and the Pyrenees loved by Brits. While it is one of the largest provinces in France, the area is recognised as being a perfect spot to enjoy the slower pace of life.
The area was known as the county of Le Perigord when ancient Celtic Gaulish tribes inhabited it, and today it is divided into four Périgords characterised by colours.
Périgord Vert, which translates to Green Perigord, named after its forestry, is made up of a verdant valley in a region crossed by plenty of beautiful rivers and streams. Perigord Blanc or White Perigord, is recognised for its meadows and chalk cliffs.
Then you have Périgord Noir (Black), which takes its name from the nearby oak and pine forests, and Périgords Pourpre (Purple) is renowned for its wine.
Dordogne boasts incredible sights, including over 1,500 castles. It also houses the famous caves of Lascaux, but they are closed to the public, so the region has a replica of them that has become a significant tourist attraction for visitors.
The region has already been proven to be extremely popular amongst Brits, having a community of 5,000 to 10,000 British residents drawn by the French lifestyle and warm weather.
British Airways’ existing route between Bergerac and London City airports will also increase to five services per week between June and September, making it a win for British tourists.
