There was panic in the West End of London on Wednesday as shoppers were evacuated from Savile Row and parts of Regent Street as the police carried out more than one controlled explosion around lunchtime.
Reports spoke of a “suspicious vehicle” on Boyle Street, which is just off Savile Row.
Police evacuated both visitors and store staff from Savile Row’s famous bespoke tailors and also sealed off the adjacent New Burlington Street and, as mentioned, parts of Regent Street, which runs parallel with Savile Row.
Photos and videos from the scene showed members of the public running from the area and others held behind police cordons as the bomb squad got to work and a bomb disposal robot was deployed.
It’s unclear whether the threat was real but it’s understood that the police presence is being stood down with the situation returning to normal.
The disruption to one of London’s busiest shopping areas comes at a bad time for the city’s retail sector. Shoppers may be out in large numbers for the January sales but footfall overall has been sluggish at times and fears of potential terrorist attacks — even if unfounded — could discourage many consumers from venturing out to the stores.
