UK Sport has revealed its greatest investment to date with £330m in Government and National Lottery funding set to benefit more than 50 sports as they embark on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games cycle. The investment includes an increase of 7% in funding for Olympic archery and 10% in funding for Paralympic archery.
Funding for the Olympic archery World Class Programme has risen from £2,612,674 for the Paris cycle to £2,800,000 for Los Angeles. For the Paralympic World Class Programme, investment for Para Archery has increased from £2,668,644 for the Paris Games to £2,925,000 for LA. The funding for both programmes covers the period from 2025-2029.
This investment bolsters UK Sport’s mission to create the greatest decade of extraordinary sporting moments; reaching, inspiring and uniting the nation.
The announcement comes following over a year of planning, together with sports, to understand their performance strategies and ambitions for LA and any specific financial needs due to anticipated changes ahead in the sport. It will see a record number of sports receive investment towards winning well in LA and beyond, continuing UK Sport’s commitment to supporting long term success and a broader range of champions and medallists.
Olympic and Paralympic sport occupies a special place in the hearts of the British public with more than 80% saying they were proud of Team GB and ParalmypicsGB’s performances at Paris 2024. The investments announced today will enable the UK’s Olympic and Paralympic sports and athletes to continue to deliver inspiration and impact for people and communities right across the UK.
The news for archery follows an incredible summer of sport which saw GB qualify a full team for the Paris Olympic Games where Tom Hall, and youngest archer at the Games, Megan Havers finished 9th. At the Paralympic Games, GB’s compound mixed team athletes Jodie Grinham and Nathan Macqueen won gold and Jodie also won the bronze medal for the compound women’s individual event.
Tom Duggan, Archery GB’s Performance Director, said: “We are delighted with today’s announcement of increased investment in the Olympic and Paralympic World Class Programmes. Over the past three years, we’ve worked hard to lay strong foundations for the future, and this ongoing support from UK Sport for the LA cycle is pivotal to that journey.
“This investment will enable us to provide more athletes with access to our world-class Performance Archery Centre, helping them unlock their potential as we build on the performances from Paris and strive for medal success in Los Angeles.”
Ruth Hall, Archery GB’s Chief Executive, said: “This unprecedented increase in funding from UK Sport demonstrates a profound belief in our athletes and their potential, while also recognising the collective accomplishments of our Performance team and the impact of archery as a sport. With a 7% boost for archery and 10% for para archery heading into the LA 2028 cycle, we are better positioned than ever to nurture talent, refine performance, and deliver on the global stage.
“We are grateful to UK Sport and the UK Government and wish to particularly acknowledge the vital role of National Lottery funding. This support has been transformative, enabling athlete development, establishing world-class facilities, and driving grassroots initiatives that form the foundation of our sport’s success.
“This investment demonstrates the value of archery in enriching lives – promoting focus, discipline, and inclusivity while building both physical and mental wellbeing. Our grassroots clubs are the bedrock of the sport, providing the foundation for participants to discover archery, develop their skills, and ultimately go on to represent their country at the highest level. This investment will have a lasting effect across the wider sport as we aim to build on our achievements in Paris, and target medal wins in LA.”
The funding package announced today will enable the UK to remain a world leading Olympic and Paralympic nation. The investments are designed to support sports to be ambitious, innovative and proactive in their approach to winning well in the next cycle and beyond, and critical to supporting Team GB and ParalympicsGB to continue to aspire to a top five medal table position in LA and Brisbane.
This funding package has also been designed to support both sports and athletes in the current financial climate. Sports, as part of their investment for LA, have all been provided with funding aimed at addressing some of the inflationary pressures, with an extra uplift for Paralympic sports in recognition of the unique requirements in the Paralympic environment.
Dr Kate Baker, Director of Performance and People, UK Sport, said: “Following the spectacular performances of Team GB and ParalympicsGB in Paris this summer, it’s so important for us to be able to keep the momentum going as we head into the LA cycle. This is our greatest investment to date, with more sports set to embark on an Olympic and Paralympic campaign with us than ever before.
“With every Games cycle comes new sports and athletes with new stories to tell and inspiration to share. With our investment supporting more breadth than ever before, as well as the entertainment, drama and spectacle we’ll no doubt experience from a Games taking place in LA, I can’t wait to see what our athletes can achieve in four years’ time.”
Stephanie Peacock, Minister of Sport, Media, Civil Society and Youth said: “As we saw this summer, the whole country comes together to support our Team GB and ParalympicsGB athletes and to celebrate their success. I am pleased that our record £9m a year increase in funding for UK Sport means that more athletes will have the opportunity to go for gold in Los Angeles in 2028.
“As well as representing our country and providing enjoyment to the millions watching, our athletes also inspire people of all ages to get involved in sport in their own communities.”
