Iconic names of UK sport have won this most prestigious individual award in the past, with England Lionesses goalkeeper Mary Earps taking the title last year.

A shortlist of six contenders was announced last week, and the winner will be decided by a public vote during the televised BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony on Tuesday night, which is live on air from 7pm.

The nominees are Warrington darts player Luke ‘The Nuke’ Littler, Leigh athlete Keely Hodgkinson, footballer Jude Bellingham, cricketer Joe Root, para-cyclist Sarah Storey and triathlete Alex Yee.

The programme, which will be presented by Gabby Logan, Alex Scott and Clare Balding and broadcast live from MediaCity in Salford, will celebrate 12 months of sporting action and achievement.

Other award winners that will be revealed on the night are Young Sports Personality of the Year – in which Littler is also nominated – Team and Coach of the Year, Unsung Hero and the Helen Rollason Award.

The Lifetime Achievement and World Sport Star awards will also be presented.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024 nominees (in alphabetical order):

JUDE BELLINGHAM:

The midfielder helped Real Madrid win Spain’s La Liga and the Champions League, scoring 23 goals in all competitions and going on to be named La Liga player of the season and Champions League young player of the season.

He netted twice on England’s journey to the Euro 2024 final.

KEELY HODGKINSON:

Claimed 800m gold for Team GB at the Paris Olympics.

After silvers at the Tokyo Games and the two most recent World Championships, the Leigh Harriers runner was a commanding victor at the Stade de France.

Earlier in the year she retained her 800m title at the European Championships.

LUKE LITTLER:

The Warrington teenager shook up the world’s darts scene on an incredible run to the PDC World Championship final on debut.

He has since gone on to claim 10 trophies, including becoming the youngest winner of a major PDC tournament with victory in the Premier League Darts, and also triumphed at the prestigious Grand Slam of Darts and World Series of Darts.

JOE ROOT:

Made history by becoming England’s record Test run scorer, overtaking Sir Alastair Cook’s 12,472 on the way to a career-best score of 262 against Pakistan.

Also in that Test, Root and Harry Brook set an England record partnership of 454.

Root also broke Cook’s record for the most Test tons by an Englishman in the second Test against Sri Lanka during the summer.

SARAH STOREY:

Britain’s most successful Paralympian added two more gold medals to her collection as she won the C4-C5 road race and C5 road time trial at the Paris Games.

They came 32 years after her first in Para-swimming in 1992.

Athe Road and Para-cycling World Championships she again won the double of the C4-C5 road race and C5 road time trial titles.

ALEX YEE:

2024 was a year in which he was crowned both Olympic and world champion.

In Paris he won his first individual Olympic gold, and he was also part of the team that won bronze in the mixed relay.

During the World Triathlon Series, triumphs in Cagliari and Weihai helped claim the maiden world title of his career.
