For years, tourism in this African country has fluctuated, but that is set to change as the tourism industry for this hidden gem country is set to boom this upcoming year.

For those who love the outdoors and destinations with a vibrant culture, this beautiful destination offers ‘world-class’ beaches, a tropical climate and incredible wildlife.

Sierra Leone, on the southwest coast of West Africa, is a beautiful destination with much to offer, and the country is doing everything it can to ensure that people across the globe experience all it has to offer.

Last year, the country opened its new international airport in Freetown, the capital city. The $270 million (approximately £211 million) expansion project saw the build of a new terminal three times the size of the previous one.

Along with the revamped airport, the country also introduced a new national airline with operations starting this month. 

Air Sierre Leone offers a direct route to the UK for the first time since 2016, and the airline plans to offer more services to cities across Africa, including Accra in Ghana, Dakar in Senegal and Abidjan in Ivory Coast. 

The minister of Transport, Alhaji Fanday Turay, said: “We hope that the new routes will provide increased numbers of visitors with the chance to experience Sierra Leone’s renowned hospitality and wealth of cultural, natural and history assets first-hand.”

Sierra Leone’s tourist site describes the country as “warm and sweet”, highlighting all of its wonders, including Africa’s largest natural harbour, which is situated in the country’s capital.

Many of the best beaches are found in or very close to the capital. Lumley Beach is one of the country’s most popular, the 4km stretch features palm trees and calm blue waters, making it a desired choice for visitors to take a nice walk, jog or just sit and relax.

However, with the beach being so close to Freetown’s centre, it still brings a sense of urban life. Along the beach are volleyball and basketball courts, and further down, there’s even an arts and crafts market, a perfect spot to purchase souvenirs. 

This adventurous beach is just one of many; some of the others include Aberdeen Beach, Bureh Beach, and Black Johnson Beach. Where the water is nearly always warm, Sierra Leone is the ideal destination for those who love water activities, particularly surfing and diving, with beaches tailored for different skill levels so everyone can have a go.
