The Kentucky Wildcats were given the AP Poll ranking of #8 last Monday, November 25. This week, thanks to some premier invitational tournaments, the top 10 has had some dramatic games, and many teams at the top of the rankings have received their first loss. Let’s review those losses and the chaos in the rankings that will follow.

The Top 10 (as of November 25):

1. Kansas
2. UCONN
3. Gonzaga
4. Auburn
5. Iowa State
6. Houston
7. Tennessee
8. Kentucky
9. Alabama
10. Marquette

Since these were made the top 10, chaos has happened in those rankings. So many teams fell around Kentucky that it’ll be fascinating to see what the AP Poll voters do. Here’s a breakdown of what happened:

#2 UCONN – 3 losses
99-97 to Memphis
73-72 to Colorado
85-67 to Dayton

#3 Gonzaga – 1 loss
86-78 to West Virginia

#5 Iowa State – 1 loss
83-81 to Auburn

#6 Houston – 2 losses
85-80 to Alabama
73-70 to San Diego State

#9 Alabama – 1 loss
83-81 to Oregon

Watching UCONN go from second in the AP Poll to unranked wouldn’t be a surprise. If I had to guess, Gonzaga will drop outside of the top 10, Iowa State will drop only a few spots since they only lost to another top 5 team, Houston will drop toward the bottom of the poll, and Alabama will drop into the teens. Since Alabama only lost to an undefeated Oregon, who looks like a great team and will probably shoot up these rankings.

Now that the dust has settled on a crazy feast week for hoops, where does that put Kentucky? Where does it look like they will jump to? It seems as if the number one and two teams will be either Auburn and then Kansas or Kansas and then Auburn. The case can easily be made for the Tigers as they have played harder teams than anyone in the country, and they keep winning. Kansas was already #1 and will either stay there or go to #2.

This leaves the third spot up for grabs, where Gonzaga will drop a few spots. There’s not really a case for Kentucky to vault Tennessee as much as you would want to see it happen. So you’d have to assume that it goes: Auburn, Kansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Marquette, and Iowa State.

They will certainly jump into the top 5 after a challenging week, and if I had to guess, they would land at #4 before they begin their own tough stretch against Clemson on the road and Gonzaga in Seattle.
