British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Thursday that his government will soon release a white paper outlining strategies to reduce migration, including reforms to the points-based entry system.

The announcement comes after official data revealed net migration to Britain surged to a record 900,000 in 2023, exceeding previous estimates. However, recent visa restrictions have started to lower the numbers.

Criticizing the former administration, Starmer said, “The previous government were running an open borders experiment.” He emphasized that his administration is committed to addressing the issue with robust measures.

As part of the reforms, the Migration Advisory Committee is reviewing sectors that rely heavily on immigration. “We will reform the Points-Based System and ensure visa applications, whether for skilled workers or shortage occupations, include new expectations to train people here in our country,” Starmer stated.

The Prime Minister also pledged to crack down on visa abuse, warning, “For far too long, we’ve been casual about malpractice in our labour market, sending a signal that we are a soft touch. Well, no more. Rules will be enforced, and employers who refuse to comply will be banned from hiring overseas labour.”
