As schools prepare to break for the October half term, families across the UK are planning their autumnal adventures.
While woodland walks may be a popular choice, a trip to the beach can offer an equally enjoyable experience, minus the summer crowds and with the added bonus of refreshing coastal breezes.
Children, in particular, love a good frolick on the beach, regardless of the season. So, if you’re considering a seaside visit this half term, a recent study has identified the top family-friendly beaches in the UK.
Formby Beach just outside Liverpool ranked fifth, outperforming beaches in Cornwall, Wales and Bournemouth.
The research, carried out by JoJo Maman Bebe, considered factors such as average Google Maps ratings and proximity to nearby towns and cities.
Formby received a score of 89.1, with an average rating of 4.7. Whitby Beach claimed the top spot with a score of 98, followed by Edinburgh’s Portobello Beach with 94.4.
Scarborough, a charming seaside town in Yorkshire, secured third place with a score of 91.6, reports Manchester Evening News.
Formby Beach, a stunning seaside location, is no stranger to accolades. It has previously been featured in The Sunday Times’ list of the UK’s best beaches.
With its golden sand dunes, breathtaking views and a backdrop of a majestic pine forest, it’s easy to understand its appeal. Unlike bustling resorts like Blackpool, Formby offers a tranquil experience with its natural beauty and absence of arcades.
It’s an ideal spot for a unique autumn stroll, but visitors are advised to bring their own refreshments as there are no facilities nearby. Access to Formby Beach is free, and parking is available at a National Trust-operated car park.
Payment can be made via cash-only pay and display machines or through the paybyphone app, with parking priced at £8.50 for the day.
