A charming fishing village in northern Norway has been described as the nation’s version of the Maldives thanks to its sandy beaches and blue waters.

Sommeroy sits on the Norwegian island of Tromso and has recently caught the attention of travellers on social media thanks to its picturesque landscape and untouched beauty.

In a video on TikTok, one travel blogger urges followers to visit the “Arctic summer paradise” as he enjoys the beautiful ocean.

He said: “Grab your paddleboard and hunt for treasures in the coral in the sand.

“It is only located a couple hours drive from Tromso and yes, I would put this on a list of the most beautiful beaches in Norway.”

Sommeroy is well known for its outdoor activities, with visitors able to experiment with a variety of water sports, hiking expeditions and climbing activities.

Due to the islands being situated north of the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set at all for 69 days between May and July and does not rise between November and January.

Historically a fishing village, the island still relies on this industry as a means of economic survival. The village remains untouched and still allows visitors an authentic window into traditional Norwegian village life.

Sommeroy is rich in culture, with rich birdlife and exotic Northern Norwegian nature ready to greet visitors.

Recent and ancient history can also be explored, with the island sitting close to where battleship Tirpitz was attacked next to Håkøya in 1944, whilst in Skavberg you can see rock carvings from 2500-5000 years back.

The island is readily accessible, with flights to the UK to Tromso flying daily and the village being an hour’s drive from the airport.

There is however one slight difference between the Maldives and Sommeroy which you probably guessed; the weather.

Labelling an island the Maldives doesn’t necessarily make it so, with average temperatures in the warmest months being around 14C.
