Brits have been issued a “risk” warning over a popular European city break.
The Foreign Office (FCDO) has given tourists some essential advice on keeping themselves safe while travelling in Romania. Romania is popular with Brits for its landscapes, castles, wildlife and towns, from Bucharest to old Transylvanian towns.
But before visiting, tourists are advised to read the government’s guidance, especially regarding one particular “risk”.
The FCDO told Britons: “There is a risk of drink spiking in bars and clubs. Be careful not to take drinks from strangers or leave your drinks unattended.”
As well as drink spiking, the FCDO advised holidaymakers to protect their belongings. Britons were told: “Be alert to petty theft in large towns, especially Bucharest. Thieves use distraction techniques and can carry out organised attacks in groups.
Partiers are also urged to not use drugs, with Romanian authorities treating all drug offences “very seriously”. The FCDO said “increasing numbers” have been given prison sentences for drug offences at music festivals.
Despite same-sex relationships being legal in Romania and there being active LGBT+ communities and events across the country, the FCDO says “the majority of LGBT+ people are not open”.
Tourists should be especially cautious in key areas, according to the FCDO. They are advised: “Take care of your passport, money and personal belongings, particularly near money exchanges and hotels, on public transport, especially to the airport, in main railway stations and inside airport terminals.”
“Criminals have copied credit or debit cards in some bars and restaurants. Use a hotel safe for valuables where possible and carry a copy of your passport.”
Photography is also banned at most airports and military airports.
The FCDO also warned that terrorist attacks in Romania “cannot be ruled out”, with “indiscriminate” attacks possible, including in places frequented by visitors.
