Last Generation has gained notoriety in Germany for stunts inspired by Just Stop Oil’s direct-action playbook and has seen several of its own members jailed.

Just over a week after Plummer and Holland’s National Gallery stunt in the UK, two Last Generation activists copied them by throwing mashed potatoes on a Claude Monet painting at the Barberini Gallery in Potsdam, just outside Berlin.

The group said after that protest that it would face high fines, criminal charges and prison time “undaunted”. The gallery was closed for months afterwards.

Its activists have also disrupted road and air traffic by glueing themselves to busy roads and runways, switching off an oil pipeline and even spray-painting Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate orange. The landmark required an expensive and weeks-long clean-up to restore

The Munich public prosecutor’s office is currently investigating whether Last Generation should be classified as a “criminal organisation” given its penchant for damaging property.

The Federal government is considering new laws that would punish trespassing on airport tarmac with up to two years in prison.
