I visited the ultimate winter sun getaway
This past winter, I did just that, trading cold mornings and heavy coats for the lush landscapes and sun-drenched beaches of Saint Lucia. What I discovered was an island that is far more than just a destination—it’s an experience that warms you to your very core.
From the moment I stepped off the plane, the warmth of Saint Lucia was undeniable. It wasn’t just the balmy air, a stark contrast to the chill I’d left behind, but the genuine smiles of the locals who greeted me.
Nestled halfway down the Eastern Caribbean archipelago, Saint Lucia is a paradise of golden beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic landscapes. Yet, what truly sets it apart is how the island beckons you to immerse yourself in its natural beauty and vibrant culture.
One of the most unforgettable experiences of my trip was visiting the Sulphur Springs Park in Soufrière. This isn’t your typical tourist spot—it’s the world’s only drive-in volcano. The idea of driving into a volcano might sound intimidating, but here, it’s an experience not to be missed.
The springs are renowned for their mud baths, naturally heated by the geothermal activity below. As I slathered the warm, mineral-rich mud over my skin, I could feel the tension of the winter months melting away. After rinsing off in the nearby Toraille Waterfalls, I felt completely rejuvenated—both in body and spirit.

No visit to Saint Lucia would be complete without exploring its cultural heart. In the village of Babonneau, I had the chance to participate in a traditional cassava bread-making experience at Fond Latisab.
This was more than just a cooking class; it was a journey into the island’s rich history. Cassava has been a staple of the local diet for centuries, and learning to prepare it the traditional way—from grinding the root to baking the bread—was a fascinating and deeply rewarding experience. It’s moments like these that make travel so enriching—you’re not just seeing a new place; you’re connecting with it.
Of all the beautiful places I visited in Saint Lucia, Sugar Beach stood out as my absolute favourite. Nestled between the iconic Pitons, this secluded beach offers a stunning combination of powdery white sand and turquoise waters, making it a true paradise.
I visited Sugar Beach for lunch, and it turned out to be one of the culinary highlights of my trip. The restaurant, set against the backdrop of the towering Pitons, served the best vegetarian food I found on the island.
The dishes were a perfect blend of fresh, local ingredients and innovative flavours, making it a meal to remember. Savouring this incredible cuisine while surrounded by such breathtaking scenery was an experience I’ll never forget.
Saint Lucia is five hours behind the UK
Pitons mountains in St Lucia
For water lovers, Saint Lucia is a dream come true. I spent an exhilarating day on a boat tour along the island’s West Coast, where every turn revealed a new spectacle. From the picture-perfect Marigot Bay to the towering majesty of the Pitons, the coastline is nothing short of breathtaking.
The tour included stops for snorkelling at some of the island’s best spots, where I swam among vibrant coral reefs and schools of colourful fish. It felt like diving into a different world, one just as warm and inviting as the island itself.
For a more tranquil experience, we headed to Roseau for a bamboo river rafting excursion. Guided by skilled locals, we drifted down the Roseau River, uncovering a serene and intimate side of Saint Lucia. As we glided past lush greenery, accompanied only by the gentle sounds of the river and birdsong, a profound sense of peace enveloped us—one that lingered long after our return home.
No visit to Saint Lucia would be complete without indulging in its culinary delights. One of the highlights of my trip was visiting Project Chocolat, a must for any chocolate lover. Located in the heart of the island’s rainforest, this immersive experience guides you through the entire chocolate-making process, from tree to bar. I even had the chance to create my own chocolate bar—an experience as delicious as it was educational.
But the true star of the show was the island’s Creole cuisine. From fresh seafood to rich, flavorful stews, every meal was a celebration of Saint Lucia’s diverse culinary heritage. The island’s food is a reflection of its history, blending African, French, and Caribbean influences into something truly unique and utterly delicious.

Saint Lucia is five hours behind the UK, which means more daylight to enjoy the island’s wonders.
Be sure to pack insect repellent and avoid wearing camouflage clothing, which is restricted on the island.
Also, keep in mind that the tropical climate can bring sudden showers, so a light rain jacket could be useful.
As I boarded the plane back to the UK, I realised that Saint Lucia had given me more than just a break from the cold—it had gifted me memories to last a lifetime. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a blend of both, Saint Lucia offers the perfect winter sun escape. It’s a place where warmth isn’t just in the weather but in every experience, every encounter, and every moment spent on this beautiful island.
Perched atop a stunning clifftop on the northern tip of Saint Lucia, Cap Maison, a boutique 5-star hotel, is the perfect choice for those wanting a quiet and romantic escape. Known for its Spanish-Caribbean architecture, lush tropical gardens, and breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea, Cap Maison offers a serene retreat that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
One of the highlights of staying at Cap Maison is indulging in its culinary offerings. The hotel’s Cliff at Cap restaurant is celebrated for its gourmet cuisine, which masterfully blends Caribbean flavours with international flair. Every meal was a delight, from the fresh seafood dishes to the decadent desserts. For a truly unique dining experience, the hotel also offers private dining on “The Rock,” a small promontory just offshore, where you can enjoy a romantic dinner under the stars.
For those considering a stay at Cap Maison, I highly recommend opting for the all-inclusive package rather than the half-board option. While half-board covers breakfast and either lunch or dinner, upgrading to all-inclusive allows you to fully indulge in everything the hotel has to offer without worrying about additional costs. This includes unlimited access to exquisite dining options, premium drinks, and even a private dinner experience. It’s a small indulgence that enhances the luxury experience and allows you to savour your holiday to the fullest.
