This pretty little Greek island is far better than popular holiday hotspots such as Corfu, Crete, or Santorini, a travel writer has said.
Paxos is a small island with a modest range of activities and sights.
The charm of such islands lies in their promise of a serene and leisurely escape.
Visitors can spend their days discovering the island’s hidden coves, enchanting caves, and picturesque beaches, as well as exploring the nearby islands.
Evenings offer a tranquil respite, with the opportunity to savour quiet dinners in charming, authentic tavernas.
Travel Writer Kendall Hill said that the Greek islands are filled with “natural beauty, the abundance of sea and sunshine”.
With plenty of direct flights from the UK, it is a popular country for Brits to visit.
Hill wrote: “My favourite Greek island? It’s usually the last one I visited.
“This year alone I’ve swooned over Santorini (despite the daunting crowds), spent an exceptional day at Lesbos, and found myself torn between the desert-island vibes of Kos and the rustic charm and ancient ruins of Kéa, just an hour from Athens but still surprisingly undiscovered.”
He added: “Recently, though, I had to decide where to go away with friends next year and, after a torturous process that I imagine is not unlike picking a favourite child – assuming you have two dozen or so who are precious to you – I eventually settled on Paxos.”
Paxos is part of the Ionian group, the “green” islands cloaked in olive, pine and cypress off Greece’s west coast, just south of Albania and across from Italy.
The writer continued: “Lined with pastel palazzi, the picturesque legacy of four centuries of Venetian rule, it has enough restaurants, cafés, bars and boutiques to easily fill a week of discovery.
“The island has no fancy hotels, but it does have many splendid villas you can rent for four or 14, conceived by people with far more money and taste than I could ever muster.”
