With summer events having peaked, consumers have been choosing pre-owned and affordable luxury items on eBay to dress for their special occasions, the resale giant has said.
And forget monochrome-safe pieces, statement accessories have turned neon with Brat Green leading the way this summer.
eBay research revealed that pressure to wearing something special for each social event was high, with 45% of consumers admitting raised expectations have been driving them to make a new purchase, with 20% of Gen-Z and Millennials spending at least £300 each per occasion.
eBay said it’s seen this first hand, with increases in searches for a number of standout styles and items. In the lead up to summer, ‘neon bags’ increased over 50%, with lime green and red particular favourite colours.
Demand for statements bags increased 40% as Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe continued to reign, with searches for the brand increasing over 35%. And the versatile Prada rattan also increased over 100% over the same period.
And as luxury brands continue to increase in price, eBay highlighted affordability. It pointed to the Fendi Baguette, which is available from £750 on eBay (more than 70% off RRP) and works out at under £65 per use if worn once a month for a year.
The study also claimed that the cultural shift towards pre-owned luxury is seeing a growing appreciation from both Gen Z and Millennials “to purchase better for less, and let their outfit and accessories do the talking”, as one in three Gen-Zers says they choose pre-owned first as it allows them to find unique items.
