It’s a packed Olympics schedule on day 14 of the Paris 2024 Games with Team GB keen to add to their medal collection.
Katarina Johnson-Thompson put herself in pole position at the end of yesterday’s heptathlon final, but still faces an uphill battle against Belgium’s double Olympic champion Nafi Thiam. The pair are evenly matched in event five, the long jump, but Thiam has the longer javelin arm and Johnson-Thompson will need to limit the damage before they race for gold in the 800m (7.15pm).
Noah Lyles says his Olympics are over after battling Covid in the 200m final last night. Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita will be back on the track looking for a medal in the women’s 4x100m final, while Zharnel Hughes and Louie Hinchliffe lead the men’s bid (finals from 6.30pm).
In the velodrome, Jack Carlin looks to upgrade his Tokyo bronze in the men’s sprint (1.41pm) before Neah Evans and Elinor Barker go in the women’s madison (final at 5.09pm).
Grace Reid and Yasmin Harper contest the women’s 3m springboard final (2pm), and medals will be handed out in climbing, hockey, boxing, canoe sprint, taekwondo and football, where Spain take on hosts France in the men’s final (5pm).

Olympics 2024: Katarina Johnson-Thompson back in action
We’re not far away from Katarina Johnson-Thompson getting back underway in the heptathlon as she looks to turn her overnight lead into gold.
It won’t be easy to hold off heptathlon legend Nafi Thiam, as well as USA’s world No 1 Anna Hall but this morning’s events could be crucial for the Brit.
The long jump (a strength for KJT) starts at 9.05am with the javelin later this morning.

Olympics 2024: Marathon swimming
All over in the men’s 10km marathon swim and it was a cracking finish as two men raced for the line! But gold goes to Kristof Rasovsky of Hungary, who beats Oliver Klemet of Germany into silver.
David Betlehem made sure it’s two Hungarians on the podium by coming third, a little way back and a superb swim by GB’s Hector Pardoe to take either sixth or seventh (it’s a photo finish with Marc-Antoine Olivier of France).

Steph Curry is still USA basketball’s cheat code thanks to Olympic lesson
Gregg Popovich once remarked that basketball was a “pretty simple game”. Sitting in the stands at the Bercy Arena, you could imagine the legendary coach breaking from his icy stare with a grin at the point Steph Curry ensured the USA survived an almighty scare.
It took Curry’s 36 points, with nine of 14 three-pointers made, to deny a spirited Serbia to reach the gold medal match at the Olympics with a 95-91 victory.

Olympics 2024 medal table: USA battle China for top spot in Paris
The 2024 Olympic Games is underway in Paris, where the United States are once again favourites to top the medal table at the end of the 17-day festival of sport.
The USA have finished on top of the table at 18 of the 29 summer Olympics, including the very first in Athens in 1896, and six of the past seven stretching back to America’s home Games in Atlanta in 1996. China punctured that streak in Beijing in 2008, and are proving stiff competition again after finishing one short of America’s 39 golds in Tokyo three years ago. Hosts Japan finished third last time ahead of Great Britain in fourth.

Olympics 2024: Marathon swimming
It’s been a journey but the final event taking place in the River Seine is happening this morning. The men’s 10km marathon swim is over halfway done in the iconic river.
At the last time-check, at 7.6km, a group of 11 swimmers had broken away from the rest of the field. That includes GB’s Hector Pardoe, who is sitting in seventh place at 17.2 seconds behind the leader, Kristof Rasovsky of Hungary. An outside shot of a medal for the Brit.
Italian 1500m silver medallist in the pool, Gregorio Paltrineri, is also in the lead group. Men’s 800m champion in the pool, Daniel Wiffen of Ireland, and another Brit, Toby Robinson, are also in the race but not the lead group.

The side of the Paris Olympics they don’t want you to see
Nation is a metro station in the east of Paris, away from the city’s carefully curated Olympic trail. There are no giant pink signs pointing the way to the nearest venue here. On the platform, a man and his dog slump on a rotten mattress. At the top of the stairs another man is lying motionless on the street, his phone spilled from his pocket, looking half-dead.
The station serves Le Place de Nation, a giant leafy roundabout with a pedestrianised ring and a dozen boulevards spoked off in every direction. It is a bustling, diverse space, and at 6pm on a humid August evening, up one of these streets, people are beginning to gather.
There are men, women and children of all ages, including babies in prams. They hail from Chad, Sudan, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Somalia and Afghanistan. By 6.30pm there are nearly 100 refugees here, waiting.
The side of the Paris Olympics they don’t want you to see
Over the past 18 months, French authorities embarked on a mission to clear the streets of Paris, busting squats and breaking up homeless encampments in the shadow of Olympic venues, writes Lawrence Ostlere, displacing thousands in an effort to hide the crisis from the world’s eyes

Noah Lyles believes Olympics are over after testing positive for Covid
Noah Lyles believes his Olympics are over after testing positive for Covid before his 200m final last night, where he claimed bronze before leaving the track on a wheelchair.
The American had aspirations of winning four gold medals at the Olympics and the next leg of his plan would have been in the 4x100m relay on Friday night. The 4x400m relay is then scheduled on Saturday night.
Lyles, however, said in an Instagram post that the 200m “will be the end of my 2024 Olympics” – the American said that it was up to the coaches of the 4x100m to make a decision on whether he competes after describing himself at around “90 to 95 percent” for the 200m.
“First I want to thank God for getting me through this entire Olympics! Second I want to congratulate [Letstile Tebogo and Kenny Bednarek] and everyone else on an amazing Olympic 200m final. Finally I want to thank everyone for the supportive messages.
“I believe this will be the end of my 2024 Olympics. It is not the Olympic I dreamed of but it has left me with so much Joy in my heart. I hope everyone enjoyed the show. Whether you were rooting for me or against me, you have to admit you watched, didn’t you? See you next time.”

Why was Noah Lyles allowed to run with Covid at the Olympics and will he race again?
Noah Lyles raced in the men’s 200m final at the Olympics and won the bronze medal before revealing he had competed with Covid.
The American, who won gold in the men’s 100m final on Sunday evening, said he had tested positive on Tuesday but decided to enter Thursday night’s race.
Lyles was attempting to complete the sprint double by winning 100m and 200m golds but finished third, beaten by Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo and American teammate Kenny Bednarek.
Lyles said his performance was “affected” by Covid but was “proud” of his efforts to win bronze while battling Covid.

Laura Muir and Georgia Bell both saw themselves through to Saturday’s 1500 metres final after securing top six finishes from the first semi at Stade de France.

Refugee trailblazer Cindy Ngamba wants to bring ‘hope to millions’ with Olympic boxing achievement
Remarkable refugee trailblazer Cindy Ngamba believes boxing her way to a historic Olympic medal can serve as a beacon of hope for millions of others battling adversity across the world.
The Cameroonian-born fighter, who is based with GB Boxing in Sheffield, became the first ever Refugee Olympic Team athlete to achieve that feat last night as her inspirational run came to an end at Roland-Garros.
Ngamba was unable to overcome Panama’s Atheyna Bylon as she went down on a 4:1 semi-final verdict to bank bronze despite another lion-hearted performance in the French capital.
