Nestled in the picturesque Wharfe Valley at the southern end of the Yorkshire Dales, Ilkley is a charming market town that offers a serene alternative to its more famous neighbour, Harrogate.
Just a 36-minute drive away, Ilkley provides visitors with a tranquil retreat, far from the bustling crowds of Harrogate, while still boasting an array of attractions and activities.
Ilkley, a former spa town, gained prominence in the nineteenth century when visitors flocked for its fresh air and luxurious hotels. Although it is no longer a premier health resort, Ilkley remains renowned for its clean air, moorland, and stunning countryside, offering a perfect escape for those seeking relaxation and natural beauty.
The town is famous for its moor, providing fantastic countryside and walks for all abilities right on your doorstep. Ilkley is also home to one of the largest cycling clubs in the country, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
For those looking to indulge, Ilkley offers excellent restaurants and independent shops selling everything from gifts to vintage clothes and books.
Visitors can enjoy afternoon tea at the famous Bettys Cafe and Tea Rooms or attend one of the many events held throughout the year, such as the Ilkley Literature Festival and the Real Food Ilkley Markets.
In comparison, Harrogate is a also Victorian spa town known for its well-preserved architecture, exquisite retail opportunities, and a rich spa heritage. It serves as a base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales and offers a wide range of activities, from adventure sports to indulgent spa treatments. Harrogate also boasts a vibrant food and drink scene, with a mix of independent restaurants and well-known names.
Despite the similarities, Ilkley stands out with its unique character and charm. The town’s architecture, cultural activities, and proximity to the countryside make it a destination worth exploring. Ilkley also has a thriving independent business scene, particularly along Leeds Road, where new music and food venues are opening regularly.
“We’ve got lots of new music and food and drink venues moving in in the next few months,” says Sarah Brookfield-Almond, Ilkley’s business improvement district manager and a resident of 20 years.
Among these newcomers are Herd Steakhouse, a new site for the award-winning Ilkley Brewery, a second restaurant from MasterChef: The Professionals finalist Matt Healy, a speakeasy-style venue called Green Room, and Fusion Chocolates, a local artisan chocolatier.
These additions complement Ilkley’s established businesses, such as Mortens hardware shop, several lovely tea rooms, the whimsically named Friends of Ham, and Martinez, an independent wine shop with a bar.
Ilkley’s blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and vibrant local businesses make it a splendid destination in its own right, distinct from but equally appealing as Harrogate. For those seeking a peaceful yet engaging getaway, Ilkley offers a perfect balance of relaxation and activity, all while avoiding the heavy tourist influx of its renowned neighbour.
