Archie Vaughan’s first-team debut for Somerset ended in the most unfortunate fashion when he was run out at the non-striker’s end before he had even faced a ball.
Vaughan, the 18-year-old son of former England captain Michael, was making his professional debut for Somerset in their One-Day Cup opener against Kent.
He bowled six tidy overs for 16 without taking a wicket as Kent were bowled out for 267 but was dismissed in the most frustrating way possible. Batting No 5, his partner Andrew Umeed drove the ball back at the bowler Charlie Stobo, who got a little touch on the ball which deflected onto the stumps. Vaughan, backing up very slightly, was run out.
Somerset were still in a good position to win the game thanks to 71 from James Rew and Umeed, who was past 50 when Vaughan was run out. Earlier, left-arm spinners Jack Leach and Lewis Goldsworthy had shared five wickets.
Vaughan signed professional terms with the county earlier this year having come through the academy, and made his debut for the England Under-19s’ Test team against their Sri Lankan counterparts earlier this month.
