Despite its vibrant nightlife, no UK cities have made it to the list of the world’s most picturesque nighttime destinations, according to a recent survey.
Travelbag study assessed 136 of the globe’s most popular cities to identify the top 10 cities to explore after dark. Factors such as Instagram hashtags, levels of light and noise pollution, and nighttime safety were analysed to compile the rankings.
Dubai has emerged as the most scenic city at night, with over 27,387 Instagram posts tagged #dubaiatnight showcasing its spectacular evening views. The city’s impressive safety score of 83.4 out of 100 for walking alone at night also contributes to its top ranking.
Travelbag highlights Dubai’s Glow Garden, which is only open in the evenings, and the breathtaking view from the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, as a must-see attraction.
In second place, Tokyo boasts over 17,167 Instagram posts under #tokyoatnight. The Japanese capital is also praised for its relatively low noise and light pollution levels (45.5 out of 100). Muscat, the capital of Oman, ranks third despite having just 132 relevant Instagram hashtags. The city’s low noise and light pollution score of 29.9 and a high safety rating of 75.7 out of 100 highlight its nighttime appeal.
The rest of the top 10 include Singapore, Hiroshima, Kyoto, New York, Sydney, Abu Dhabi, and Taipei. Each of these cities offers unique nighttime experiences, balancing aesthetic appeal with safety and manageable pollution levels. Notably, Taipei is rated the safest city on the list, scoring 86.3 out of 100 for safety when walking alone at night.
In Europe, Reykjavik stands out as the most picturesque city at night. The Icelandic capital features minimal light and noise pollution and a high safety score, making it ideal for nighttime exploration.
Sheryl, Travelbag’s Destination Manager for the Middle East and Indian Ocean, said: “Some of the best views can be seen from Burj Khalifa, but having the Burj Khalifa in your view at night is one of the most mesmerising sights there are.”
The study also notes that Instagram plays a significant role in showcasing these cities’ nighttime beauty. The hashtag #dubaiatnight has garnered the most posts, followed by #tokyoatnight. These social media snapshots offer glimpses of the stunning nightscapes that have earned these cities their top spots on the list.
Despite the UK not making the cut, the list highlights a diverse range of global destinations, each offering unique and breathtaking nighttime experiences. Whether it’s the ultramodern skyline of Dubai or the tranquil streets of Reykjavik, these cities provide memorable vistas for night owls and photographers alike.
