With its iconic tower, Pleasure Beach Resort and sparkling illuminations, it’s hard not to recognise Blackpool as one of the UK’s most famous traditional seaside resorts. Though there have been reports of mixed opinions of the classic coastal hotspot, it remains a firm favourite for families and tourists looking to enjoy a Great British summer day out.
And, according to a survey conducted this year, it has been dubbed the “friendliest” large UK destination to visit in 2024.
With summer upon us, there’s no better way to enjoy the hot spells of weather than by packing up and heading to the coast. The research, commissioned by LNER, analysed data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) on the personal well-being of residents in major towns and cities, as well as the number of five-star rated hotels and restaurants based on customer reviews from a leading travel platform. This data was then used to give each city a score out of 100.
Blackpool topped the likes of York, Newcastle and Edinburgh in the ranking, with LNER’s report stating: “According to the latest ONS data, residents of Blackpool report high levels of satisfaction, happiness and a sense of purpose in life, which accounts for the town’s exceptional hospitality.”
In 2022, the number of people visiting Blackpool surged beyond 20 million, showing the destination’s ability to bounce back after the turbulence of the pandemic.
Given its location in Lancashire, it serves as a national destination and can be a more affordable alternative to the likes of Devon and Cornwall.
The area grew into a major seaside resort in the 1800s, with the Blackpool Illuminations first lighting up in 1879 to help the resort extend its summer season into the autumn. Blackpool’s annual Illuminations display shines nightly from September until January.
In the summer months, you’ll find people flocking to the beach to enjoy vinegar-covered fish and chips on the sand or even brave a dip in the sea.
But there is more that draws people to the resort than just the sea. Along with B&Bs and hotels, Blackpool is also home to several caravan and holiday parks.
The Pleasure Beach Resort allows the whole family to ride the Big Dipper or get competitive with fun fairground games.
Or, in just 60 seconds you can travel a whopping 300ft to reach the Tower Eye at the top of the landmark Blackpool Tower. From here, enjoy panoramic views over the Irish Sea and, on clear days, you might catch a glimpse of the Lake District and North Wales.
The seaside resort is also home to three piers, each with its own unique offering. The North Pier is the oldest and longest pier and is considered the most laid back of the three, with lovely views and spots to sit and enjoy a drink.
Central Pier is home to one of Blackpool’s most famous landmarks, the Big Wheel, along with plenty of amusements.
South Pier features the Adrenaline Zone, with thrilling rides that soar above the sea below.
