Last year, John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats tried to change the offensive philosophy by shooting more 3-pointers.
They did just that, as Kentucky shot 24.2 3s a game at a 40.9% rate, making them the top-ranked 3-point shooting team in college basketball. They ranked 78th in the nation for most 3-point attempts at 24.2 per game.
Mark Pope and his BYU team ranked second in the nation at 3-pointers attempted per game at 32 attempts. The only team higher was North Florida who shot 33.2 3-point attempts a game (and ironically features UK target Chaz Lanier).
With those numbers being so high for BYU, it makes sense that they want to bring that offensive philosophy to Kentucky.
In an interview with KSR, Kentucky assistant coach Cody Fueger said he wants to see Kentucky attempt over 30 3s per game next season.
“How coach Pope likes to build his program, his teams is give these guys a ton of confidence first and foremost. He wants them to play fast, free, and fearless,” said Fueger. “Offensively, we’re trying to get up 35 3s a game, and if you turn down an open shot, you’re coming to sit on the bench. That’s how he coaches. He wants to give these guys tons of freedom and wants them to play off their instincts. So that’s a huge thing for us offensively. Just playing fast, playing the transition. And let these guys make plays and make reads.”
Shooting 35 3s a game is a lot, but Kentucky does have the firepower to shoot that many if they have to, with Koby Brea, Kerr Kriisa, and Andrew Carr all being able to shoot from the outside. Now, if they also add Lanier, Jaxson Robinson, and/or Ansley Almonor. They will have a team that can shoot lights out from 3.
Hopefully, the new coaching staff and different philosophies will bring in better luck in the years to come for Kentucky.
