Tucked away in Herefordshire’s rolling Chiltern Hills is a stunning lavender field which might just transport you 700 miles across the channel to Provence, France. Provence is home to some of the most picturesque lavender fields in the world which bloom between May and early August and are famously a draw for tourists.
However, you can get a very similar experience at the well-known Hitchin Lavender field, a popular day-trip spot during the summer months.
Hitchin is located approximately one hour and 17 minutes by car from London, one hour at 41 minutes from Birmingham and one hour and 51 minutes from Oxford.
The lavender fields are nestled in Ickleford, on Cadwell Farm. While the fields are closed for the winter and spring, they open in early summer when the blooms are beginning to emerge.
The farm is also home to a Sunflower field which opens a little later in the season.
Cadwell Farm has not yet announced when the lavender fields will reopen for 2024 but it is likely to be in late June or early July.
The lavender field is home to approximately 40km of lavender rows, where guests can wander through and snap some stunning photographs. You also have the opportunity to pick fresh flowers to take home with you.
However, bees love the area so if you are taking little ones with you it’s a good idea to remind them not to disturb them.
Hitchin Lavender Fields also has a café nearby serving up sweet and savoury treats, and refreshments. There is also a playground for children to enjoy.
On its website, Hitchin Lavender states: “We will be open again early in the summer of 2024, with a specific opening date to be announced in due course.”
Once the opening dates have been announced, visitors will be able to purchase tickets in advance online. Hitchin Lavender sells products made using its freshly grown lavender including candles, essential oils and bath products.
