Travelling with a budget airline might offer low ticket prices but when it comes to hand luggage rules, the price can soon add up. Passengers travelling with the likes of Ryanair and easyJet must abide by strict weight and size restrictions if they want to travel with only a free luggage item – any additional hand luggage or checked bags will come at a price.
However, according to an expert, a “simple yet effective shoe rule” could help you stay within the parameters of what you are allowed to take.
The key is to think about your trip itinerary and plan ahead while packing, being mindful about what goes in your suitcase and what stays at home.
Gabriel Miller, an expert at Gatsby Shoes, pointed out that shoes can be the bulkiest and sometimes heaviest items in your suitcase. Therefore, Gabriel recommends limiting how many you take with you.
“Packing efficiently not only eases the stress of travel but also helps you navigate different situations with ease, safe in the knowledge that you have a shoe for every occasion,” said Gabriel.
“The concept is simple yet effective: limit yourself to packing no more than three types of shoes for any trip. This approach not only saves space but also encourages thoughtful packing.”
According to Gabriel, the right mix of shoes can cover most travel activities, from days spent exploring a new city to an elegant dinner at night.
“It’s about bringing what you need, not what you might use,” added the shoe expert.
Gabriel breaks down the best shoes to pack into three categories, advising holidaymakers to pack just one pair of shoes from each category to see them through their holiday.
The first pair of shoes you should pack are comfortable walking or athletic shoes, which can also be worn on your travel days. “Your primary pair of shoes should be comfortable for walking, durable enough for adventure activities, and stylish enough not to detract from your daily outfits,” said Gabriel. “Opt for neutral colours that blend seamlessly with multiple outfits.”
Now it’s time to think about a nicer pair of shoes for any formal events or nice diners you might enjoy on your travels. “Even on vacation, a dressier shoe option is crucial for evenings out or more formal events,” said Gabriel.
Gabriel suggests a versatile pair of loafers for men or a sleek pair of heeled sandals for women that can elevate any outfit.
If you’re holidaying in a hot climate or are heading to a beach destination, a pair of sandals or appropriate beach shoes are worth popping in. Usually, these will take up the least space in your bag.
“Ideal for relaxing days by the water or casual strolls, a good pair of sandals is indispensable,” said Gabriel. “Choose options that are easy to clean, quick to dry, and comfortable enough for prolonged wear.”
