Mark Pope is making moves in the Kentucky Basketball frontcourt.
According to On3’s Joe Tipton, Kentucky will get a visit from Utah State Aggies forward Great Osobor next week.
The Louisville Cardinals, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and Washington Huskies are also expected to get visits. He will have one season of eligibility remaining.
Originally a class of 2021 signee of Montana State, Osobor spent two seasons with the Bobcats before entering the transfer portal and picking the Aggies during the 2023 offseason.
This past season, the 6-foot-8, 250-pound big man averaged 17.7 points (57.7% shooting), 9.0 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, 1.3 steals, and 2.8 assists in 33.7 minutes per game
Kentucky was hoping to get Osobor in for a visit and locked up this week, but we’ll have to wait at least another week for that to possibly happen.
Meanwhile, Kentucky has officially signed Drexel center Amari Williams, the school announced on Tuesday. Williams will have one season of eligibility remaining.
“At times, Amari Williams looks like a man among boys on the court,” head coach Mark Pope said in a press release. “He is a three-time conference defensive player of the year, which is incredibly hard to do. He is bringing a big presence to the game and is going to serve as a rim-protector and rebounder. Amari is a gifted defensive player who can switch on to any position, one through five, which will add security to how everybody else feels on the court.
“Offensively, he is dangerous at the rim, and he’s one of the special passers in college basketball. Amari can make all of the reads, all of the passes, all of the plays and he fits into exactly what we want to do on either end of the court.”
This past season as a senior, the 6-foot-11 Williams averaged 12.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.8 blocks in 22.9 minutes per game. He started all 32 games for Drexel en route to earning his third straight Coastal Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year award. He also earned an All-CAA First-Team selection.
Williams is set to be the starting 5 next season, while Osobor could be his frontcourt mate if the latter ultimately commits to Kentucky in the coming weeks.
A Williams/Osobor duo would certainly be one of the better frontcourts in America. Let’s hope Mark Pope can get it done.
