If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life and enjoy a luxurious staycation then, according to a new ranking, there is one region which offers the best chances of peace, quiet and luxury.
Experts from Defender set out to find the “best remote luxury destinations” across the UK, analysing factors including the number of highly rated five-star hotels, golf clubs, Michelin restaurants, wellness retreats, hiking trails and National Trust sites.
With 10 five-star hotels on offer and a fairly small population of just over 40,400 residents, the Lake District came out on top as the ultimate destination for those seeking a luxurious escape into nature.
“Known for its scenic landscapes filled with mountains and lakes, the Lake District in Cumbria takes the top spot overall for the best remote luxury destination in Great Britain,” said the experts from Defender.
“With a population of just over 40,000 across the entire area, this National Park is for adventure-goers who wish to seek out the natural British landscape.
“There are over 32 highly rated walks over woods and waters to discover and 23 National Trust locations to see including Grasmere, Fell Foot and Wray Castle.”
The popular vacation destination is known for its glacial ribbon lakes, fell mountains and historic literary associations.
Many people choose to base themselves in the market towns of Kendal, Ambleside and Keswick, located on scenic Derwentwater, as they all offer great bases for exploring the area.
The market towns all feature traditional pubs and inns, quaint coffee shops and cafés and even small, local art galleries. There are also lots of outdoor activities to enjoy, including hiking, water sports and beautiful walks through the countryside.
The highest mountain in the Lake District is Scafell Pike towering at 978m high. It is one of the mountains climbed on the Three Peaks Challenge walk, but it is not for the faint-hearted and requires significant experience and preparation.
According to Tripadvisor, one of the top-rated luxury hotels in the Lake District is Low Wood Bay Resort and Spa, located right on the shoreline of Lake Windermere boasting spectacular views.
The hotel also features the exclusive Winander Club with its own private bar and breakfast lounge.
