A 115-home estate was given planning permission last month, and now dozens more are coming to the other side of Kingsway
Dozens of new homes could be built on Burnage Cricket Club under new plans unveiled this week.
Some 66 homes could be constructed on the sports pitch, which is on the corner of Mauldeth Road and Kingsway.
Cricket has not been played regularly on the site since 2011, but the property developer behind the project, Views, says it will fund ‘a replacement cricket pitch nearby’.
Patrick Sheridan, senior development manager, said: “Our plans will breathe new life into the former Burnage Cricket Club ground and provide much needed new family homes to the area.
“We are especially pleased to be able to facilitate the provision of a replacement cricket pitch nearby.”
The plans include 53 houses, seven of which will be three-bedroom properties, and the remaining 46 will be four-bedroom homes. Another 13 one-bedroom apartments will be constructed ‘over two small blocks’.
One-fifth will be affordable homes, but all of the houses will have a private back garden and front driveway with car parking space.
However, the project isn’t without controversy. In the past residents have worried about the effect extra traffic could create on local roads.
To combat these worries, Views says it will encourage residents to leave the car at home by improving the walking route to nearby Mauldeth Road railway station, as trains stopping there only take seven minutes to reach Manchester Piccadilly. There will also be a new cycling and walking route from the estate on to Kingsway.
While Views has just submitted its plans to the council on the eastern side of Kingsway, more than 100 new homes are going to be built on the site of a B&M superstore on the western side of the A34.
Developer Triple Jersey Ltd secured planning permission to build 115 houses and flats last month, its second attempt to build an estate on the site. Plans for 112 homes were withdrawn in 2023 after councillors, including city leader Bev Craig, voiced their opposition.
