Sitting in the right place on a plane can be crucial, especially if the flight is a long one.

You certainly don’t want to be uncomfortable, and everyone has their own preference. It can also depend on your age and who you are travelling with.

Luckily, an expert has issued advice as to how to bag yourself the “perfect” seats, which can also ensure you save some money.

Dawn Morwood, co-director of Cheap Deals Away, describes a “zone” method, which involves dividing parts of the plane into “strategic” areas based on each family member’s needs.

These include the front, middle and “flexible” zones.

On the front area, the expert advises: “Book aisle seats near the front for older family members.

“This makes boarding and getting off much easier, plus they’ll have quick access to the loos. The front of the plane also tends to be quieter and experiences less turbulence.”

The middle section, near the wings, is perfect for parents with young children, Ms Morwood adds.

She said: “This area experiences the least turbulence, which is great for little ones who might get nervous.

“Choose window seats for the kids – it keeps them entertained with the view and means they won’t be disturbed by other passengers needing to get past.”

Teenagers and more “independent” family members, meanwhile, are best seated “slightly separately”.

This gives everyone a bit of breathing space, according to the expert. 

Ms Morwood said: “Teens often appreciate having their own space. Book them aisle or window seats within sight but not right next to you. It gives them independence while keeping them close enough if needed.”

She also shared “insider knowledge” as to how you can save cash, adding: “Most airlines now charge extra for seat selection, but there are ways around this.

“Book early – this gives you more choice and often better prices. Some airlines also offer free seat selection for families with young children if you call their customer service.”

In addition, the expert described how several tools can help make seat selection easier.

Ms Morwood said: “Use websites like SeatGuru to check the best spots on your specific plane. Also, download your airline’s app – sometimes they offer free seat selection through their apps, and you’ll get notifications if better seats become available.”
