South Kirkby’s previous signalling system, in place for over 50 years, had become increasingly difficult to maintain. The replacement now provides a smart signalling system that improves operational efficiency by automating signal and points management.
The new setup ensures enhanced safety by monitoring train positions more accurately, reducing risks for both passengers and Network Rail teams.
A key component of the project is Alstom’s Smartlock 400 computer-based interlocking system, housed at the York Rail Operating Centre. This system prevents conflicting train movements through junctions and crossings, improving overall network safety.
Joanne Boocock, Digital and Integrated Systems (D&IS) Project Director at Alstom said:
The successful completion of the South Kirkby resignalling project is a testament to the strong collaboration between Network Rail, Alstom and our supply chain.
We’re proud to have delivered innovative, future-ready solutions – such as our computer-based interlocking system and object controller – enhancing railway reliability and performance for passengers and freight services. This project exemplifies how digital advancements can futureproof the UK’s railway and we are delighted to have contributed to this milestone achievement.
The resignalling project introduced 26 new signals, positioned to optimise train flow. Additionally, lineside equipment has been renewed, and power supplies, feeder cables, and casings have been installed.
Network Rail workers now benefit from improved safety measures, including new warning systems along the 17-mile stretch and track ‘lock-out’ devices for critical maintenance tasks.
Paul Carabine, Senior Project Engineer at Network Rail said:
The South Kirkby resignalling project brings noticeable benefits for passengers and our colleagues. The changes improve reliability and performance for services, while also boosting safety for our teams working on the track.
The upgraded system is projected to save 880 hours in staff maintenance costs annually. Additionally, it is fully compatible with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), a digital train control system that will be progressively implemented across the UK.
By integrating digital technology, the South Kirkby resignalling project enhances both passenger experience and operational efficiency, thus helping to modernsie the UK rail network.
Network Rail has begun the third stage of works on the creation of the new Mid Cornwall Metro (MCM) scheme, which will see a doubling of trains running b
