With temperatures that rarely dip below 20C, even in January, this winter sun destination has earned a reputation as the “Hawaii of Europe” – and it’s not hard to see why.

From towering cliffs and dramatic coastlines to subtropical gardens, the landscape in Madeira, Portugal, is nothing short of spectacular.

Despite being located just a two-and-a-half hour flight away from the UK, this beachgoers’ haven has been praised for its mild winters which, according to travel company Omio, averages around 20C.

According to TripAdvisor reviewer Jacionasty, the island’s culture is described as “warm,” and it’s not just the temperatures that reflect that sentiment.

The reviewer shared: “I’ll make this short and sweet – Madeira is a jewel. The people, the land, even the air is delicious.

“I highly recommend going if you love nature, if you enjoy great food, a warm culture and breathtaking views at every turn.”

While it’s often the natural beauty that first draws tourists, there’s a sense of serenity here that makes it feel worlds apart from other European destinations.

Tourists can hike through lush forests, relax by the ocean, or sample the island’s unique cuisine, which blends influences from Portugal, Africa, and the Atlantic.

The rich flavours of grilled fish, sweet passionfruit, and traditional “bolo do caco” bread are a staple of local dining.

Tripadvisor user Ruivi echoed the sentiment, adding: “This is a true gem in the Atlantic ocean. If you’re looking for amazing natural wonders, friendly people, good food, and an overall feel of tranquility this is the place to visit.

“If you’re a nature lover then surely you’ll feel at home here.”

Heliommreis simply stated: “If you like great weather, fabulous nature, good food… this is the place. One of the best vacations I had.”

But beyond its obvious appeal, the “Hawaii of Europe”, as TrainPal labelled it in a TikTok video, Madeira is also easy to reach in just over two hours from main UK airports.
